I haven't fished that area specifically, but I have fished other areas nearby and I think it may be a bit early. Most adult stripers are migratory, and start to show up in May/June. Some areas hold schoolie stripers all year.

Early May is just that, early. Some fish winter over in the sound but not much, Even weakfish don't start happening until mid to late May.
If you booked a trip, trust your guide. That's what you pay them for...

Later in the summer, sight fishing to stripers in the south shore surf (Fire Island) is a blast!
But I haven't fished those waters since '78.

Roper,

Good things come to those who wade...

I just spoke with my brother last night about stripers.
He has been a striper fanatic for many years. He fishes all up and down the Jersey coast both surf and boat.
Fishing has been slow all spring until last week when "it broke wide open", open enough to take the next day off work and head to the shore. This should continue until your trip.
Good luck.
