What's more important to you for fishing conditions with a double hander and why?

It would seem that accuracy would be great if you new exactly where in the run the fish was, not always the case , while you do cover more water with distance , and increase the odds of hitting a fish , but you may not be able to pinpoint a lie -
What say you ?

Without accuracy, distance doesn't matter. Without distance, you might as well throw a single hander.

I believe it depends on the water you're fishing more than a concrete answer one way or another. For the rivers I fish, accuracy is more important because it doesn't take a long baller to reach the other side.

But what do I know, I'm new to spey casting, this is just my observation.

You gotta swing a long rod Pan :thumb:, you are welcome you know, I'm willing to bury the hatchet !! But don't confuse the clubs title with your morning shower ritual you can't seem to quit ! Hows the counseling going on that anyways??:rofl: I also know you know how to fish , but I really couldn't give you that credit and still jack wit ya !! Remember, "The only one mess'n with you is you " !!!
We should fish some time , you get first pass through remember ?!! Still not quite ready to invite Kerry to the "He man woman haters club " though... !!! He needs to work out some anger management stuff...

I really don't care what rod a guy fishes, nore do I know what's best, just what I prefer - That's all -:thumb:

I'd go for accuracy, And try to fish as clean as possible-

Cheeze and freakin' rice. Off to get the popcorn so early in the morning.
Distance and accuracy are fine but not one versus the other in principle. Consider presentation too. If you are sight fishing to fish you can see or can see rising then you have to have the distance to reach them, the accuracy to place the fly in their feeding zone and the presentation that will ensure you've not spooked them. This would be a combined tactical approach that seems to benefit from each of your skills, regardless of which you think is more important you'll need a balance of them all for success. It also won't have shit to do with the rod in hand or hands and the line on that rod if you can deliver the goods as needed. When searching for fish that you can't see or can't see evidence of you might be able to forego the accuracy and just bomb out big distance casts. I don't have the distance, accuracy or presentation cards to play so I'm on the search for stupid fish.

Ed, good points, and I bet you are a bit more "Fishy" than you let off to be dude :thumb:

I hit a fish this year at 50' or so , right behind a large bolder in an obvious lie- Though the shot was close, I landed it right where I wanted to . He was there. Iv'e thought at times that I simply wanted to cast as far as I could and cover as much water as possible, but there is a cost, at my skill level . I'd rather fish under contoll -

It depends on the river. On larger waters where fish can be holding just about any where I will wing it out as far as I can to cover a ton of water. On smaller waters I am looking to hit specific pockets and seams that I know or suspect hold fish. Just like with single hand rods the more you can do with the rod the more situations you can fish successfully. Work both accuracy and distance in your practice sessions.

Neither acuracy nor distance mean a thing if you don't understand the concept of reading the water in regards to the conditions Reading water is primary. Then it is being able to cast to a spot that will allow the fly to either swing or drift into the desired lie.

Too often people get obsessed with how far they can cast and overlook the real holding water! Quite often that water is right where many people have waded out to throw long casts, across several seams, to hit the far side of the river.

It is not about how much water you "cover" in any given presentation, it is all about how well water is covered in a likely lie! To do that requires accuracy.

More time should be spent looking at the river and analysing the dynamics before making a cast. Laying out long casts without fore thought is a low productive way to fish. The more seams and or current irregularities a cast crosses the less procictive a presentation. Distance without being able to control the line properly is a hinderance rather than an aid.
