Alaska Guides

Need some help....I moved from the Seattle area to Colorado two years ago and no longer have too many contacts in the Seattle fishing area. I have a friend and her family who want to send their dad up to Alaska for his birthday next year to go after Salmon.
He is not a fly fisherman from what I heard so I'm figuring a boat near the deltas or ????
Any suggestions on time of the year, boat, stream, wade, ?????
i wanted to send her a short list of boat guides as well as all inclusive lodges that you all might have had great experiences with already?
Thanks

Derrick's Tsiu River Lodge gets my seal of approval. Try and schedule for late the last week of August or first few weeks in September. Silver mouths the size of a D10 CAT bucket going after Pink Pollywog's... starts getting ho hum after awhile ;).

Dove Island lodge in Sitka, it's a 5 star high end all inclusive saltwater lodge that also does seaplane fly(the owner has his own beaver) outs to fly fish rivers. He will be pampered and feed like a king. The meals where outstanding and the fishing easy.

Jane & I fished out of Alagnak lodge & had a great time , spendy but the food was great and that year the king fishing was great. The nice thing about boat fishing on a river is there's little chance of having to deal with rough water.

The first question is how much do they want to spend? The second, is what do they want to fish for: what kind of salmon? Third, is if he does not fly fish, does he want to troll or cast lures? I guess the fourth is what kind of shape is Dad in? Can he walk lots or does he just want to sit and reel?

I asked a few more questions. He is in good shape for 80, but I'm guessing a lot of wade fishing and hiking would be a bit much. So maybe a boat would be best. I don't think he is is hung on a specific fishing style when it comes to trolling or lures, but maybe a boat in the delta areas and not out deep sea fishing. I know if it was for me there would be a lot more direction here, so sorry for being a bit vague. based on his age and desire maybe a fishing lodge on one of the lakes or deltas.
Eric,

BN2FSH's question about how much you want to spend is important. From your post it looks like an inexpensive DIY trip is not in order, so it would likely need to be a package that includes transportation, lodging, and a fishing guide with a boat. I suggest you check out Prince of Wales Sportfishing. It's a fishing charter service out of Craig, AK operated by a local, Rob Endsley who is a co-host on ESPN's outdoor line radio show. He has 3 day/4 night packages that include transportation from Ketchikan, lodging, and most meals. Your friend's dad will catch salmon, halibut, and bottom fish.

It's not my style, so I haven't done this trip, but several friends and acquaintances have. They have a great time and bring home two 50-pound boxes of processed fish each. You can check it out online or contact Rob at [email protected].

Hi Eric,
I run a guide business based out of King Salmon, Alaska on the Naknek River and I think I could take care of your friends dad. We fish for King Salmon in July and Coho in August as well as giant trout in the fall. I would love the chance to talk to you more about what I can offer. Salmo_g even fished with me about a hundred years ago up there. Shoot me an email - [email protected]

I can vouch that you will not go wrong with Justin or Kate. I have fished with both several times. New, solid, reliable and comfortable boats and equipment. On time, hard working and respectful. Knowledgeable about and supportive of the resource. Very comfortable accommodations.

Justin and Kate are two of the fishyest people you will ever meet!!!
Good to have a Crump sighting.

Go sox,
Cds
Thanks for the kind words guys! After many years of working for other really good operators in Bristol Bay, Kate and I decided to give it a go on our own last summer and ran our own business. The response exceeded our expectations in every way possible! Next summer can't come soon enough.
Charles - I swing by from time to time, I just need to shoot up a post more often.
A Justin sighting indeed! Where ya' been? I've been thinking about another King Salmon - Naknek - September trip. So many places; so little September!

I can't comment on the fishing near Sitka, but pretty good I expect. I can tell you that Sitka was my favorite town in AK. Scenic, great history and most importantly friendly residents. I haven't been there in many years but I remember it fondly.

Hey Salmo! I've been been busy! Kate and I bought a place on the Oregon coast a few years ago, (read:endless home projects..) and have been growing our winter steelhead guide business more and more every season. This year we start guiding in early January and stay busy until the middle of April, then its a few weeks off to catch our breath. We go to Christmas Island for the last two weeks of May, then a week back home to start packing our things for AK again. This whole guiding thing has turned into a real job, its crazy!

If you are thinking about another trip to the Naknek in September, I have some availability. I can handle every King Salmon, AK related aspect of your trip.....come on up!

Justin
@Justin Crump, please shoot me a PM with your contact info; interested in Oregon coast winter fisheries.
Thanks
