No I'm not looking to have one built. Just curious how many of you seriously build custom lines by weighing the line and cutting them to size, varying up heads, etc.

Looking for people who do this often. People who will build for friends, etc

I suppose I fall into this category. I have been modifying, splicing, and creating lines from scratch for about 20 years now. Never for profit always for the fun of it. Mostly for myself but also for friends. It never really gets old there is always something new to learn.

I took up spey fishing about twenty years ago. In those days, we had only a few styles of spey lines, including double tapers, so a lot of chopping and splicing was going on. That included making multi-density sink tips. After about five - seven years, roughly estimated, I found that the available lines were better and more varied, so I seldom have to make any radical alterations nowadays. I'd still feel naked without my electronic scale and snap gauge.

In that time, spey rods have gotten a little better, and certainly more varied. But lines have improved at an exponential rate!

I'm glad I got to learn at the beginning of the new revolution of the 2 handers in PNW. I started with a 9140 ST Criox Imperial with a Windcutter multi tip, 1 in 50 cast was good. Then things got a whole lot better, glad I didn't have to go through what you old timers... cough... cough... hhhhuuummm, I mean the first generation spay casters :D

With some of the lines these days the cores are not as easily penetrated with a needle. But I seem to get by with off the shelf stuff for most of what I do... although I am still hoarding some old lines just for their splice-ability!

I learned from the best, the Sultan of Splice. Most of the lines I still use I spliced myself. Although with the variety of lines available today making your own is not necessary. I still have my line building kit with a variety of level line in several weights. I think it was Aaron who got one of the line makers to do runs of level line. I purchased as much as I could at the time and have rolls of the stuff. I also still have a bunch of unopened boxes of Cortland Double Taper Spey lines in several weights. I’ve been hoarding the stuff for years.

use to make all my lines before there was a whole lot of choices out there, with river fish as it is now I don't mess around with it like we did in the earlier years. but I'm still fishing lines that were developed by the gang at Skagit Anglers in Mt. Vernon .

I just took up the challenge of trying to built my own shooting heads. I don't really know what I'm doing but with import DT lines at $6-$10 on eBay and designer heads >$50 I can screw around a little without feeling like I'm wasting money. I'm using the following as a basic guide:

Taking a bunch of rods w/o reels and a bunch of uncut lines to the park this past weekend was an interesting experience. I managed to build a 27' head for my 6 wt that serves as a reversible single-spey/shooting head for $3.75 (half of a $7.50 DT9F line). Far from perfect but it loads easy and was a fun project. If any of you have any online resources (ie. templates) please post them.

I too started with the St. Croix Imperial 14' 9/10 with the old style Windcutter. I believe that was around '99 or 2000. I still have my line splicing kit and some level line purchased from Aaron. It was a lot of fun building a line, taking it to the water, making casts and cutting pieces off, foot by foot until I had the line dialed in. I also enjoyed building lines for friends when they got a new rod. Like others, I haven't built a line in a couple of years because of everything that is available now. But, I was just thinking about a line the other day for a short and heavy weight rod that I enjoy using. Thanks for the reminder, I think I'll dig out my kit and scale this weekend and see if I have everything needed.

Ok, my purpose of post was I have a bunch of donated line. I was thinking of selling it if there were line builders and putting money into our PHWFF account. I do believe there is some bulk 12wt line too.
