Just returned from of week chillin' with the wife & kids at our favorite spot on Orcas island. Coffee on the beach in the morning, beer on the beach in the afternoon, wine on the beach at sunset - sure beats working for a living! Now if I could just get my 12-year-old to row out and pull the crab pot...
Fished from the beach all week. Not a ton of bait, but when we saw some, it was thick. Took a few small lings on a sinking line. Saw several nice salmon roll; one evening cast a popper for over 5 minutes to a BIG fish working the surface - no take, but still almost wet my shorts from excitement. Saturday evening right at sunset I caught & released a nice 5-6lb native coho throwing a clouser WITH MY SPEY ROD. I've finally figured out how to cast this thing without wrapping line around myself or hooking my ear. These big boys are pretty darned fun to throw from the beach, and i was reaching water taht I never coupld reach with my single-handed rods; however, all of the locals who saw me thought I was nuts. Question: Are many guys using their speys in Puget Sound for salmon from the beach?
