Just returned from of week chillin' with the wife & kids at our favorite spot on Orcas island. Coffee on the beach in the morning, beer on the beach in the afternoon, wine on the beach at sunset - sure beats working for a living! Now if I could just get my 12-year-old to row out and pull the crab pot...

Fished from the beach all week. Not a ton of bait, but when we saw some, it was thick. Took a few small lings on a sinking line. Saw several nice salmon roll; one evening cast a popper for over 5 minutes to a BIG fish working the surface - no take, but still almost wet my shorts from excitement. Saturday evening right at sunset I caught & released a nice 5-6lb native coho throwing a clouser WITH MY SPEY ROD. I've finally figured out how to cast this thing without wrapping line around myself or hooking my ear. These big boys are pretty darned fun to throw from the beach, and i was reaching water taht I never coupld reach with my single-handed rods; however, all of the locals who saw me thought I was nuts. Question: Are many guys using their speys in Puget Sound for salmon from the beach?

I've tried it and have fun with it, despite periodically nailing the back of my head with a clouser. Who cares what the locals think, if you've got it and want to use it go for it. I try to use mine when the currents are moving to get tuned up from disasterously awful to laughably awful in preparation to trips where the two hander will be my tool of choice.

Sounds like a nice relaxing day. I fish with a two hander from the beach at Vashon at least every other weekend and have found: #1 go buy a Saltwater Long Line of your choice (man they really bomb-out there) #2 Fancy casting is out the door, I stick with a simple Snake Roll or Poke anchor and go. I figured out after a number of times that the fish would take right at my feet. After I made a long distance collect call to the fish I would tuck the rod under my arm and strip the line hand over hand right to the tip (the take was always within 10 feet). Anyway just my input Mumbles can help you more than I since he is always fishing the beach Good Luck to you.

I like the two handed retrive with my switch rod. I can't strip with a single hand as fast as Stonefish, that guy is a machine.
