Have you ever had a beach day for SRC where you couldn't strip it fast enough. I had on a Muddler and the faster I stripped it the sillier they got. It was like LMB before a thunderstorm back home. Only landed two. One was nice. The fly got whacked a dozen times and I hooked up a few more. But what fun. I was actually laughing out loud. Anyway, had to share.

All you SRC folks I've been reading for the last year did not overestimate the fun that these fish provide.

Muddlers are such a PITA to tie. I gotta put together some foam jobber and spend more time fishing.

One of the best buys in fly fishing is a two-pack of $1.29 hardware store bought, Chinese tied, Muddler Minnow flies. Right up there with a Rubbermaid Dishpan Stripping Basket.

Oh, I love it to be sure. The only time it really bites you in the ass is when you call up a buddy and guarantee great fishing. Of course it happens when he/she shows up. Then you look like a fool or a liar depending on who your buddy is...

Now I must change tactics. I'll update later.

What is everyone's go to Fall fly pattern? Kidding. I just need to get the tying bench setup. Just moved in. Other priorities taking precedent...

This has happened a few times for me. I am out there with an angler on the beaches, and I am showing them a cast, and I am dropping the fly down to the water and picking it back up again with a back cast right away. The fly has just enough time on the water to create a little slash of water behind it as I pick it up. If I am doing this right, the leader and fly are just about all that is on the water between casts, and only the fly disturbs the water. Many times I have done this, maybe up to a dozen times, always with the fly landing in roughly the same few square feet of surface area. And a trout will whack that thing like there's no tomorrow. It happened last week, and I ended up landing the biggest sea-run that I have seen in awhile, about 18-19 inches and deeeeeep! The Deer Hair Muddler fly is deadly for this, (with or without greasing it). It's amazing how well this has worked when one would otherwise belive that there are no fish around at all.

Bob, I hear you. If a fish misses on the retrieve and I yank it out of the water instead of strip striking like a pro, I false cast, shoot, and immediately drag the fly as hard as possible across the surface where the fish missed. I feel the dragging fly gets its attention no matter which direction it went. Then it's game back on and maybe a hooked fish if I can keep my wits.

I hooked up with a fat one this morning on a small white and chartreuse clouser.

Got three tonight and everyone cleared the water on the take.

Saw multiple fish airborne chasing baitfish.

The silly fish were back again this evening. Greased Muddler stripped fast. Bob, I tried your repeat false casting technique. It worked great on getting large fish to swirl but only the small ones would actually take the fly tonight. Some of the "short" boils were absolutely huge. They reminded me of huge Naknek 'bows swirling on smolts migrating in the spring.

I plan to go subsurface and small and sparse to try and hook up with those big guys that were coming up short on the greased Muddler.

Also discovered the rolled Muddler today. WHAT?! That thing is like a hundred times easier to tie than a standard Gapen Muddler. I doubt they will grease in the film very well though.

Anyway, that's my report from tonight.

I'm looking forward to hooking up with some of these beasts in freshwater soon. Flowing freshwater is my first love.
