lost your boat, and the 6 people who were in it, to the river. I wonder if you realize how close you were to sinking, when you ran bow first into the trees on river left, after missing the takeout, and the left side of your Clacka dipped to an inch above the water, oars in the air.

Where were your life jackets? Throw bag? Any safety gear?

I really hope you made it down to Bristol ok, and yes, I tried to help, but you had no throw rope or anything.

Six in a clackacraft? I was really freaked out last month when I was in the canyon for the first time, literally surrouned in my cataraft by floaters on the most incredibly incapable devices. My family and my boat were my priority but there were folks going hard into overhanging trees, root balls and banging over the few exposed boulders with no capability of control. The river is not forgiving. Thanks for the reminder Derek.

I saw a ton of that this past Fri. Alex and I had a flotilla of idiots run into the back of his boat, then right through where we were fishing. I saw a lot of small kids with no preservers as well.

At least these safety minded guys had flotation devices aboard...

I was warned of what to expect by many who had a lot of canyon floating experience. I thought I was prepared, but I saw grown folks in some of the smallest inflatable rings, floating lawn chairs and I'm pretty sure one guy had a set of water wings and a beach ball, nothing more. There were a few times when a mass of lashed together things would bump into my boat, or interfere with an oar stroke. I saw a middle aged guy in a solo "raft" and paddle, the paddle blades were all cracked, missing peices and even had holes. I saw that guy go under about three low hanging bushes in a row and just feared I'd be plucking him out of the water. The only life vests I think I saw all day were in my boat and Jim Henderson's. My wife did remove three destroyed vinyl floating devices from overhanging brush and we scored a nifty beach ball. There were lots of empty drink containers and I even plucked up a six pack of beers that were unopened. Somewhere above me someone lost a bunch of stuff. I hope they were alright. Nice pick of the blow up doll floatilla Jason, is that supposed to be some Karma Sutra group pose or something?

When it comes to floating down rivers in the summer time. Most people leave their smarts at home. I have seen big groups of people get into the water on the S/F Stilly with anything that will float. Thos cheap vinal air mattress's and they will lay across them. No regard to their safety. I just cringe at what could happen to them.

Youth and immortality. That photo could have been me and many of my classmates in high school and college in the early to mid 60's on the Yakima. Never thought about anything other than a good time. Pump up the tubes and air mattresses, get the girls, hang the beer on the side and go. What were we thinking? And the fishermen? Ask them how they were doing as we drifted through their spot. Sincere apologies to those I offended.

One of the reasons I like living on the Skagit. Most dumb ass floaters stay away. To big and to cold.

Went 5 for 7 this morning. I didn't see any bozos in tubes all morning.

Pretty good Jason. Maybe this is all Darwinian Natural Selection. Getting the morons out of the gene pool.

Leland.
From the shallow end, this lot.

I couldn't believe the number of people floating tubes/mattresses on the lower Klickitat last week. I really want to know how they went about a few of those nasty chutes down there in their air mattresses.
No joke. And I was a bit antsy in a watermaster in the beginning of the float.

Ah, Kudos to you, Jason!!! I didn't realize you snapped a photo. Absolutely Bitchin`!!
Now what kind of photog would I be if I let that shit float down river without capturing it for posterity.

You were noticing the boys in various stages of undress and cowboy hats before? Yikes!
Buuuuuuuuuuurn.
