I've got 10 days to backpack in your neck of the woods (WA)in early/mid August and would dearly love to combine it with some 'alpine' flyfishing (ala The Wind River Range in WY). Any suggestions? I'm just starting to look at some state maps... The Olympics? North Cascades?...

I hiked up the Elwah River last year in September and had a great time. At three days it wasn't enough time to fish. If you hike in @ 11-13 miles you can get into some beautiful area and good fishing. :THUMBSUP

I would lean towards the Olympics. You'll have plenty of time to explore the area. The N. Cascades is also a good choice. I would tend to stay away from the I-90 / Hgy. 2 corridors. There are some great lakes with brookies but the vandalism at the trail heads has been a problem. What a pain to come back after a great trip to find some ---- has trashed your vehicle.

I concur that the Elwha is your best bet. I have been over 20 miles up the trail and had great fishing. Most of the major camp areas have cables strung for hanging your food outside the reach of bears but take 50' of parachute or heavier cord just in case. The lower river in the park also has great fishing between the lakes.

The best alpine lake fishing is found at least an hour off trail or at lakes that do not allow for round trip day trips. Streams between lakes often have great fishing, especially where the trail doesn't go right along side.

I think I'm leaning towards the Olympics. Thanks for the input. Here's another ignorant?. Are there sea -runs (trout/salmon) in mid August that I should consider? (Beach hiking + fishing would be very cool!)

In mid August you will have a shot at Searuns, salmon, and steelhead in virtually all the peninsula rivers. Above all impassable structures will be plenty of wild trout.
