I fished the incominng tide at Prichard on Bainbridge Island last night. The rain had died down to a steady mist with heavy overcast. The wind was swirling from all directions, the surface was pretty calm, but casting was tough.

I didn't see any fish for the first 30 minutes, but then ran into a pod and saw wild action for 30 minuites. I landed two nice 12" SR's, missed three others.

Very exciting!

I love this time of year!!!

HELP!.......
I'm an intermediate fly fisherman at the best the grew up in Spokane fly fishing the rivers of eastern Washington, Idaho and Montana. Fly Fishing in saltwater is therefore a whole new experience. I am struggling to figure where to go, how to read the water, etc. My goal is to figure out the SR and then possibly move to salmon. That said I have been out 4 times over theblast three weeks between Bainbridge, Purdy, kopachuck and Ollala and have caught a total of 3 SR's. Very frustrating! Any shared secrets would be great! I live in Laurelhurst so figuring where to go is probably first on my list of priorities.

Thanks!

Hey Cojex....

FYI - We have a Puget Sound Fly Fishing class scheduled for Sunday, September 19th. We'll be covering all of the topics that tend to make this fishery a bit intimidating to those that haven't done it before, or that are having a tough time getting a hang of it. Check out the "Events" portion of the Forum, and see more. Also, you can just give us a call at the shop, and we can provide more details. Should be a great day on the water!

Cheers,

Hello, I'm a newbe to your site and an off islander. In fact, I’m from Albuquerque, NM. But, my wife, Kathy, and I have rented a place on Rockaway Beach from November 24 through Nov 28. I do love to fly fish, fresh or salt water. I was hoping that you might be willing to give me a little bit of help and even a few secrets (not your best spots unless you are willing to share even that with such an off islander as me). But I don’t know the weight of rod(s) to bring, the kind of fish I’d be after or which are in season at that time, where there is fishing on the island, the lures etc. I’ll have a rented car so I can get around the island. Anyhow, whatever you guys give will save me a bunch of time when I get there. What’s a good fly fishing shop in the area? If any of you get to NM, I’d be glad to give you the same information for my state. We do have some outstanding fly fishing areas, e.g. the San Juan Rive (but we are lacking, like 0, in saltwater fishing).

Anyhow, thanks for whatever you can send on. Maybe I’ll run into you on the island.

DennyJ - 5 or 6 wt 9' rod, floating or intermediate line, any baitfish pattern/streamer pattern you like either unweighted or lightly weighted, size 6 or 8 hooks are a good size - don't go too big with these guys. Not too many "secret" spots on the island - any public park/state park/road end will have a chance at fish. Even rockaway beach will give you a good shot. Just make sure you rinse off your gear after fishing the salt.

Just go to Prichard Park, Ft. Ward Park, or Point White and you can't go wrong.

Grew up on Bainbridge. We used to troll little spinners in Eagle Harbor before we learned about fly fishing. We fished just about everywhere we could get to the water in later years with the fly rod. Fay Bainbridge was good, so were the beaches at Pt White. There was a lot of streams on the island that we fished. I used the top two sections off my first bamboo fly rod and taped a reel on for the creeks, that was fun. Manitou beach and Lynwood bay were good spots also.

Later on Sequim bay on the incoming tide was a lot of fun. Fun to hear people talk about the Sea Runs, I never killed them as I was into C&R before most people knew about it.
