Well Gary, I was just thinking about posting the plans for my first bone fish fly fishing trip. This salt water fly fishing bug is killing me right now. I started into this fly fishing mess last April and now I'm arranging a trip to Belize for bones. And I REALLY hate airline travel so for me to decide to fly that far to fly fish, well, it's got to be a horrible addiction. I don't care if the bones are only 12 inches long, I just want to hook one up on a fly rod. I've caught them on light spinning gear and jigs so I know what kind of speed they have. Who knows, maybe I'll even "blind hog" a permit or small tarpon.

Thanks for posting the photo of that lightening bolt of a fish. It's only made my impatience worse.

Yes Karl, even a 12" bone can be a ripper.
I know what ya mean about the air travel, any flight over 2 hours is a killer for me.
A friend told me to take some meds that will keep ya asleep, I don't much like that idea either.
Have a good time and post a report on your return.

my first bonefish came as a surprise. As teenagers me and my friend were fishing from a 10' jon boat in biscayne bay throwing plugs with wire leader for 'cudas in a foot or two of water. It seemed like a cloud passed in front of the sun quickly because of a shadow that zoomed past. 3 seconds later we both were hooked up with small bonefish. The cloud must have been a large school of fast moving fish! I'll never forget holding my spinning rod up high and getting absolutely sprayed (on my sunglasses!) drops of saltwater as the line just flew off the reel. That fish was probably only 2 lbs but still the most amazing two runs. Never really targeted bones since then but fully understand the addiction.

For air travel we've had luck with our Alaska Airlines Visa card points and companion tickets. Advil PM is a decent help for sleeping on longer flights.

Cheers,
JR

Dirty Dog, thanks for posting that warm weather and silver bullet photo. Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't that crab fly hanging out of that bonefish's mouth one of Duffer's Plate Lunch? Brings a whole new meaning to "got crabs"?
