Who wants to host one? I want to learn. I was out on the Nooksack today with a few other gear guys...I had my single hander and realized the advantages of learning to Spey. I could not reach the holding water! After about half an hour my arm was exhausted. I either learn to Spey or start bringing along my gear rod.

Bwillroll,

If you couldn't reach the holding water on the Nooksack with your single handed rod, and you arm was exhausted after half an hour, it's your casting technique that's holding you back, not the lack of a Spey rod. Spey casting is harder to learn than single hand fly casting, so if you can't reach the water with your single hand rod, you ain't gonna' be better off with a Spey rod unless and until you become a better Spey caster than single hand caster.

Good diagnosis Sg, unless his gear is not matched up right. When I first started with a heavier rod, an 8wt, I was a soup sandwich. (yes, I know I still am at least that messed up or more) I think I had a line that was underlined to the rod and I could not get the rod to load, line to carry or anything. Add to that my poor self taught casting and I was doomed, wore out and frustrated. Maybe hit a local shop and see what they can do with your setup. Maybe a tweak here and there, plus some improved casting will find you more comfort and range. Best.

bwillroll, contact Mike Kinney. He's a member in good standing, and works at the fly shop near Arlington. He holds semi-weekly free classes on the stilly prolly 45 minutes from you. Or, have him come up to the Nook for a paid class..I have him coming over to the Yak in October to teach 6-8 of us eastsiders. Outstanding teacher..uber patient, and knows his shite. Consider Mike in the same class as Dec, McCune, Ward, all of the spey jedi's locally.

Lets do this! I built a Spey rod down at Greggs custom rods, but as of yet have not used (time is an issue with me). I'll be out of town until through 9/12, but the following weekend would be great or a night during the week would be great. KerryS how many guys would you need to make it worth while? You up for doing some instruction?

Whoa, there you all. I am not an instructor of any sort let alone a casting instructor. Sometimes I might get lucky and tell someone something useful.

I am willing to get together with a few guys and gals and do some casting. Always fun to try out new rods and lines. If we can get a couple of folks to come along and bring some rods I got a couple that need some testing. Anyone got a 9/10/11 wind cutter spooled up? I got a Lochmor Z that if I remember correctly loved that line and would like to try it again.

One of the reasons that I moved the clinic up north to the Stilly was because of how many people said they wished it was a little closer to Bham but I haven't seen any of you guys from up there. I'm having a clinic on Sunday 9-12 and would love to have you. MK

Tell us the location Mike as so we can all show up since everyone is looking for a clinic. How far is this from B-ham, my guess is about 25 min?

Arlington is only like 45 minutes away. Certainly worth the time if it means getting some kinney instruction. Maybe a carpool down is a better idea than doing anything on the Nookie.

Unfortunately Hamsters are notoriously fickle.

Directions to The Stillaguamish Clinic: To get to Blue Stilly park take exit 208 and head east towards Arlington and then take the first left (about 3 blocks) You will see a Fire station there. The road is called Strotz road then just follow the road all of the way down to the river. You will... see my white GMC pickup there. I will be at the upper end of the bar.

I'll be tied up with moving and building a new house shortly. For now, I have the time, and I'd love to have the distraction. I'm nobody's idea of an expert - more of an intermediate with 15 years' experience - but I've shown the basics to more than a few beginners. I find the best place to teach is on the Nooksack, just upstream from the Mt. Baker Highway bridge at Nugent's Corners (good parking, short walk, sufficient room, and river right orientation). How about a few hours on a Saturday (or weekday) while the weather is still decent?

Evidently(according to simon & garfunckel) they turn on frequently as well
