A little different look from the nymph version

More in line with the Euro sea trout pattern; the aftershaft thorax creates the illusion of bulk and allows the hackle to flow a bit better.

hook - Mustad 79580 #6
thread - Danville 6/0 black
underbody - non-tox wire .025
tail - hackle tips badger
rib - fine wire silver
abdomen - tinsel silver
thorax - pheasant aftershaft dyed black
hackle - badger

mash barb, wrap front 1/3 of shank with non-tox

start thread, tie in rib, wrap back to bend

measure (shank length) a pair of hackle tips; tie in and smooth butts

tie in tinsel behind non-tox; wrap to the tail and back and tie off

counterwrap rib; helicopter end, cover with thread

create thread loop; insert aftershaft, spin

tie in (folded) hackle by tip, lay over top of aftershaft

moisten fingers, stroke back hackle and aftershaft while wrapping forward; tie off/trim, whip finish, SHHAN

Regards,
Scott

@ScottP - the aftershaft is from a dyed pheasant rump? As always, awesome photographs and SBS! Thanks.

Great looking streamer Scott.
Is the stem of the aftershaft feather wrapped as part of the loop?
Is the stem of the aftershaft feather wrapped as part of the loop?
Yep. I sandwich the whole feather within the loop (waxing the thread helps keep it in place); doesn't show up well - black thread on black feather

and then when I spin it, the stem becomes part of process

I could capture fibers from one side of the feather within a clip, trim them off, insert within the loop and spin, but that's a lot more work and I'd only have 1/2 of the fibers.

Thank you Scott, I always enjoy your SBS posts.

I can honestly say that I never had much luck with this pattern - even tried them with gold-ribbed bodies.

I thought about the pictures in your SBS and remembered pictures of you using the Petitjohn clip (I'd like one but not a set of everything...) and then this method of capturing stem and all. I have been working on getting your technique to work for me on dyed olive aftershaft scuds. It's working! Thanks again.
