Terry and I went to Roses lake on Sunday to try and catch some dinner.
The blue gill were still very tight to the weeds, but we did catch a few.
We were using olive bead head buggers and soft hackle pheasant.
A few more warm days and the blue gill fishing should be hot.

I filet them, roll in corn meal and deep fry hot and fast in my wok.
You can use any kinda breading, to your taste.
Beer batter is good also.

I believe you might have a couple that qualify as "titty bream". Good eat'n there. Lots of fun on a real light rod, too.

OMG! Karl? titty bream????? Last time I heard that phrase I was way down in the South! And Gary I have ALOT of action on Cassidy for the bream - coupled with some nice crappie/LM Bass action too.

Karl, I've never heard the term "titty bream".
Can you give me a little back ground.
We were at Roses for trout, with our 5wt, but the trout were tight lipped.
Next trip for the bream will be with our 4 and 3wt rods.
I cut my fishing teeth on crappie and blue gill as a kid.
Hard to beat for table fair.

Hey Gary,

Titty bream are bream (southern term for bluegills, pronounced "brim") so large you have to hold them against your chest (hence "titty) to unhook them. A typical conversation would be:

"How'd ya'll do today?"
"Oh, we got a mess"
"Bream"
"Yes, sir, mostly. Got some good'un's, too. Couple of real nice titty bream. Also got some big shellcrackers, a few goggle eyes, and some stump knockers. Woulda caught more but the damn grindle wore us out."
"Ya'll gonna eat'm?"
"Yes, sir, we're fixin to fry up a bunch now. Ya'll got any meal? We need some for the hush puppies. If not we'll just fix us up some cheese grits and cole slaw. Come on 'n join us. We got plenty."

I honestly do miss the South. Good folks, lots of fish, just too damn hot.

Thanks for the report Andy, that's good to hear. I had my kickboat out on Cassidy last summer and saw some action the bait guys were having with some smaller Crappie along the NW shore in the standing timber.

Didn't try it - was chasing bass with popping bugs in the pads - but after a few of Ive's Crappie Feast reports I decided to chase a few myself this year.

What sort of rig are you fishing out of?

And Karl in regards to your Southern conversation you for got 2 minor/major details. No comment on how good the fishing was...ie "they was biting good. I tell ya' it was on like a pot ah neck bones!" OR you missed any reference to how damn humid and hot it was - -- "Man i tell ya - you coulda fried a toemater on the boat t'day"


And yes - I can make these jokes legally - born and raised in the South!

From Washington (Seattle/Yakima) originally. Spent 25+ years in Mississippi (military), Louisiana (undergrad), Alabama (grad school: Auburn fisheries), and Georgia (work and grad school again). I enjoyed all of it except for Mississippi and that had to do with a drunk 1st. Sgt. I miss it except for the heat. Great folks down that way and they work hard to enhance their fisheries resources. And I can't find any BBQ up here that comes even close to what they have.
