I am in Utah so the laws may vary, but here, when you register the boat, the DMV gives you the vin (unless the boat DOES have one) I was given a vin number for my Outlaw X5 in the form of a sticker, but when I registered it, the DMV didn't use it, they gave me the number.
Like I said, don't know if the laws are the same.

I know that when I registered my Outcast they just issued the state #'s to apply and they have to match the vin on the toon (same as my canoe and kayak) Bucks told me to call back tomorrow and talk to Dave as he was the fishing guy and would know. I guess it doesnt really matter as long as the ODNR guy doesnt ask where the serial # is :)

Well, mine has no numbers on it and I don't imagine allot of the pontoons out there have the numbers. My Cardiac Canyon was the only boat I owned that had # on One of the pontoons. I had a Bucks Alpine that I put a motor on, it had no number either.

Guys around here are putting motors on V tubes like ODC and Super Fat Cats and you know they have no number.

If you put ANY type of motor power (gas/electric), to ANY type of watercraft in the state of Indiana, or Illinois, then you had better have ALL of your paperwork in order. They will confiscate your craft & gear, then cite (ticket, fines plus fees), you for whatever other violations they can dream up. In Illinois, it is my understanding that they now want you to register even hand/leg powered watercraft. IE; paddleboats, canoes, & kayaks. Oh, yeah, & you better have your pfd's in the craft too, for each person.

You can file this "Heads up" notice under FYI.

Yep, Ohio is mandatory on the pfd's and you do have to have the craft registered with numbers and the OHIO tag on canoes, kayaks, pontoons, etc.. even if hand powered if used on public water. I am totally ok with that and the price of 24.00 for 3 years and it helps keep the stolen market down a bit I think because without the registration you cannot use it without getting a ticket (150$) I know our state park lakes seem to be pretty nice and the the kids fishing programs are pretty good so no problems with the fee on my end. I also have Outcast with the vin#'s and nothing on this. ** Trout master- do you know what year your southforks are? I was told by Dave at Bucks Bags that they did not start putting vin's on until after 2001 but I know mine is a newer model. He is helping me get this resolved so big thumbs up to him and the customer service.

I just looked on the US Coast Guard website. Outcast's MIC (Manufacturer Identification Code) is "OCG". What that means is that the boat, somewhere has a HIN (Hull Identification Number). If the company who builds the product doesn't know where it is I don't know what to tell you. Actually, they have to put it in two different locations. It should be 12 numbers and letters in a specific order. If the toon is older that 1985 (I think) it should be 9. I find it odd that the DMV of any state would assign a number to a vessel or vehicle built by someone else. The contact, according to the USCG is a Dan.

It is bizarre that one would have to license one man pontoon boats. I love my Soutfork to death, but it is a floating lawn chair like all other fly fishing pontoons. Soon we'll need to license our fly rods and flies as well.

Jeez, you guys! Don't give these damn college educated idiots/politicians any further ideas. Indiana's worse than Illinois, because you have to re-register your craft every year, whereas only once every three years in Illinois. Plus, if you want to put it on any "Federal Park/Waters", then you must purchase another sticker, (renewable every year, of course), for an additional cost to the consumer.

I bought my float tube @ the Gander Mtn. store in Merrillville, In. & have had a lot of fun in my water bound lazy boy over the eight, or nine years that I've had it, but when I upgraded to a pontoon earlier this year, the used frame I bought from Riverman doesn't have any #'s stamped/printed anywhere, so I don't know how old it is, & I never got a receipt from him for it either, but I can make a dumb old receipt & have any(friend)body sign it. And all that I'm going to license is the frame because that is the part that holds the motor. (Which btw, is all the law requires, & will assist in reducing the amount of property tax that I'll wind up paying.) The tubes are replaceable items, just like the battery, or trolling motor, oars, etcetera.
