Has anyone built their own rod tube/ rack for a raft with frame? I have some ideas and would love some feedback. I want a rack that can be stepped on, without rod damage, and can be reached by the rower while sitting in the raft. A fully enclosed tube would NOT be ideal, as you would have to beach the boat, get out and pull the entire length of the rod out of the tube. My idea was to purchas a 10' long section of pvc, and either cut it in half down the lenght, strap it to the rowing frame, and build an open reel box at one end.
Any ideas from similar projects? Thanks,
P.M.

Thanks guys,

After a trip to the HomeDepot, I found a 10' section of 5 inch plastic drainfield pipe, with small holes running down the side. It is VERY lightweight, and should be able to hold 3 rods, which is a must for me. I will get some pics up after I build it. Should only cost me ten dollars!

Pat, I've got the tubes that are accessible only from the end of the boats. It is not ideal but keeps the rods safe. I hope you find a design that works for removing while in the boat (other than reaching down to pass it all the way out ending up dangling the rod in the drink while you slide its full length out). My concern with the pipe with holes is that if there is sliding of the guides there is potential snags coming out or misfeeds going in that could cost a stripper, snake guide or tip. I've thought about some PVC box beam cut on one edge then installing some pillars or columns to that cut side. The gaps between the pillars could facilitate rod entry, several rods could work well in there. It might take some research to see how many pillars would be needed to shore up the strength lost by the full length or partial length cut (maybe the cut need not extend all the way, could be routed out in strategic places or such) such that you can still step on the top. I love the project idea.
