Next week I'm off for Spring Break and I'm thinking of heading down to Central Oregon, Bend area to flyfish. I'm familiar with the Crooked, the Metolius and the Deschutes, but what I'm really looking for is some good lakes that might be fishing well throught the first couple of weeks in April. If you know of any, or if you know of any great resources, let me know.

And since this is a Washington forum Lenore has fished hot the last couple of weekends but the fish will soon be hitting their spawn hard. Were any of you over there the last couple of weekends? I fished the Northend, both times out of a blue pontoon boats with two different women. I was the one catching all the fish. Rocky Ford has also been great for those folks throwing eggs in the lower section, but if your not into that, the upper section has fished awesome with scuds. But only if your patient enough to fish them properly.

Regarding lakes in Central Oregon...

I haven't had much experience in Central Oregon, but I know Eastern Oregon has a lot of really good lakes. They include Chickahominy, Crane Prairie Reservoir, Davis Lake, East Lake, Hosmer Lake, Lava Lake, and Mann Lake. Unfortunately, the lake fishing in the first couple of weeks will be pretty spotty. Chickahominy went dry during the drought this year and there isn't much in the way of fish left. Crane Prairie is an awesome place but is closed until April 26th. The rest of the lakes mentioned have had low water problems and some of them will still have ice.

My suggestion is to hit the Metolius, Deschutes, Crooked, and Fall Rivers, in that order. The Metolius is insane, beautiful, unique, and funky. One of my all time favorite rivers. I haven't fished the rest, but I know the Deschutes has good trout fishing but the steelhead are mostly summer runs. The Crooked is supposed to be good fishing, but I hear the trout are pretty small.

I just got back from the Far East and about all I can reccomend right now is Ana reservior near Summer Lake. It has chunky trout and stripers. If you've never caught a striper on a 7wt, its awesome! Chick is bone dry and Mann is a long drive and tends to be windy this time of year. I fished Merrill today and its at flood stage, I only got one little cut on a gray quill sz20 but I had the lake to myself. Eastern Oregon is beautiful for travelling and hot springs, the fishing can be pretty hit or miss so just be prepared. We had a great road trip and a blast at Summer Lake hot springs and Crystal crane. We stayed one night at the Cowboy Dinner Tree (Biggest steak EVER) and saw family. The fishing was slow all around and I would reccomend talking to Amy at the fly shop in Maupin, she also has Gillies Gear Highlanders for $160 if anyone needs a great wader. There's a dog there that fetches Gink and 5X tippett, really impressive!rofessor

I was also at Lenore yesterday with a couple of buddies. I believe I was anchored right along side of you in a blue outcast. Did you have a red dry bag hitched to the side of your boat? I was the guy with no net and enjoying the hot "bobber action" along with 47 other people at the North end.

I still cannot believe the amount of insect activity on that lake. No wonder those fish are so healthy. I had one take off as soon as it was hooked and burn across the lake upset that he had been fooled. My 5 weight couldn't stop his run and he just entered my backing before coming unbuttoned on one constant pull. I palmed the reel but everytime I lightened the pressure, he capitalized. I've never had a Lahotan do that to me, normally they just bulldog, tire, and head in. I wish I could have seen that fish, but there was no stopping him especially with 5X tippet. How big do those fish get? #16 red snowcone was on the menu.:thumb

what do i know, im just a stupid kid

lenore held the state record for years until omak lake claimed top prize. you defintiely hooked up on a hot fiah. thats the first ive heard of a lahontan burning it up like that. sweet man. its fish like that that keep you going on slow days. you just never know. thats the great thing about fishing.
