A new neighbor has a Cheeky fly reel that I tried out. It seem to be well constructed and very smooth operating. I've never heard of the company or seen their products around. But then, I'm middle-aged and admittedly outdated. Anyone have their reels and what do you think of them?

There has been some threads about the brand over the last few years. When I see something like that all that comes to mind is "hipster" I know it's judgmental of me, but come on. Neon green! Really? Bet their gear stuff is real popular on the bass pro circuit.

Well, this guy is a retired airline pilot and as far from hipster as Swimmy is from Greenland. It was a two-tone reel and he did say he bought it on a whim. Still, it seemed well made. I was just in Ennis today for the Tie One On show. I must admit, those frigging Abel reels with the lithograph fish skins are pretty cool... almost makes FSA want to up my game ;).

If Cheeky can ride herd on a bunch of Chinese Cats, then they might have a decent product. Color does seem to be the defining mark for branding products. I would prefer the color that is most durable, as long as it isn't pink.

Why doesn't fly fishing have a pink month like the other sports? Then we can have 11 months of camo.

I still chuckle time to time thinking of this opening post and some of the subsequent thread.

I stepped around a boulder into a favorite run of mine, where I have never seen another person. There was someone there, but that didn't bother me. As I sat on the rock and watched, I realized a few "different" things he had going on. He had a beggar Vance looking golf cap....a big beard.....smoking a big curly shaped pipe....a plaid shirt that I would actually wear....and somewhere he found wading pants that looked like skinny jeans. His stream bag was an old leather shoulder sling, and as he brought in a little cutty, I watched him turn and slip it into an old weaved basket creel. He came our of the water and walked towards me and tipped his creel towards me and said with a really weird grin..."this spot is probably fished out". I folded my arms and said "hmmm....you do know this is catch and release only water?" I said too late for those fish though. I just kind of sat there taking it all, when he pointed out that we both had Sage One rods. He asked what my reel was, and I said a Lamson Litespeed 2. He held his up proudly, and I was actually curious because his was huge and was bright green and blue. He said..."I only use Cheeky reels! I told him I hadn't heard of them, and he informed me that that was weird because it is a $600 reel. I humored him hoping he would leave, and said "cool man....best of luck to you...oh....and fishing regulation books are free!" He walked up a trail as I stepped into the water, and I was trying to make sense of the cartoon I just saw. Dude never even took the Sherlock Holmes pipe out of his mouth the whole interaction.
I'm really against judging folks, but $600 rainbow colored reels?

Okay, so how does this guy catch fish with no rod shaft but just the reel and the tooth clamp handle?

Must be one hell of a reel!!!
I wonder what that cork tastes like?
It must be the opposite of tenkara. Instead of no reel, they have no rod.

I think it's to signify that the fish was so freakin big that only the Cheeky reel survived.

For what it's worth, I've never used one...but to my knowledge, they're Asian import reels...and for the price you can get an equivalent US made reel that's also a top-tier performer...so even if they're as good as other reels at their price point, I'm going to be far more inclined to go with a US built one.

I'm by no means a "buy 'Murican no matter what" type, but, all else being equal, I expect the Asian imports to compete on price, with a possible tradeoff in quality. Even if quality is equal, I expect a price break.
