Good hunting Steve! I'd say it's a Ruffed, most likely a female. The stripe on the tail feathers will be broken in the center feathers. A solid stripe in the feathers is a male. I can't tell you how many times I've been walking back to camp, bird(s) in one hand, gun in the other, and a bird will flush, a beautiful slow passing shot in front of me...it's Murphy I tell you, the bastard...
