A few weeks back I punched a button on my computer that said: "Updates are ready for your computer". I had seen that announcement hundreds of times over the years but never responded to it. Thinking, what the hell-it hasn't been updated for 5 years, I went ahead and hoped for the best. The best didn't happen but what did happen was that I can no longer get on the WFF board without first logging in with my user name and typing my password. Always before it was automatic but by now has become real tedious.

I have tried what little I know how to remedy this but somewhere a switch must be off that was once on. But where, when, how, why? Any ideas what went wrong and I how I can correct it?

Thanks for listening to me whine......

Ive, on an update to my computer my settings for cookies changed from "allow cookies" to "don't allow cookies" (can't remember the exact wording for the settings). Once I reset it to allow cookies, checked the remember me box and signed in I've been able to access the site unfettered from home, afar and on my hand held. Not saying this is the issue, and I'm not an IT guy, but maybe something in the automatic updates has altered your internet or security settings.

There is a good reason for cookies being disabled. It's a pretty good idea to go through the hassle of logging in manually every time. Especially if you re-use your password for different sites. Say your online bank account password is the same as your joeshcmoe.com account password ect.... It's still somewhat easy to snag someones PWDs grabbing keystrokes but it is easier to get around some malware anti virus software by snagging cookies and cracking them later.

Guys, keep your cache clear, Update your computers often and get a solid Firewall/Malware/Antivirus app installed. They're free.

The kind of cookies I like to disable are ginger cookies made with fresh ground ginger, molasses, a stick of butter........ummmmm! But now you tell me my computer gots cookies too? How do I enable/disable them and what is their function? And yeah, I click remember me first but it just never remembers. The update has been a downdate but what should I expect from a machine that requires you to hit 'Start' in order to stop!.

To customize cookie settings for an individual website

In Internet Explorer, click the Tools button, and then click Internet Options.
Click the Privacy tab, and then click Sites.
In Address of website, type the complete address (URL) of the website for which you want to specify custom settings. For example, http://www.microsoft.com.
To specify that you want Internet Explorer to always allow cookies from the specified website to be saved on your computer, click Allow. To specify that you want Internet Explorer to never allow cookies from the specified website to be saved on your computer, click Block.
Repeat steps 3 and 4 for each website you want to block or allow. When you are finished, click OK twice.

for IE always have it ASK to accept cookies......Then never use it again. Then make the switch to Firefox!

Best way to go in Linux then you can run windows and mac(or neither!)

No more problems.....If you can get past a learning curve!

I do not recommend "demoing" an Apple unless you're prepared to buy one. Doesn't take long to figure out those Microsoft guys have their head pretty far up you know where.

I've used both platforms for over a decade, and Macs are not the end all be all like everyone says. In fact, I had a lot more problems with my Macs than I ever had with Windows. Finally got rid of my last Mac this last winter, and don't intend on getting another one. Just not worth the extra money (especially since I can't get half the software I use for them) with Windows 7 kicking ass and taking names. Unless you're a graphics design or computer animation professional, I see no advantage to Macs whatsoever.

I'm trying to keep my current XP laptop alive longer to avoid windows 7. The misses has it on her new machine and it works well with some occasional questions to tech support, upgrades for other plug in electronic devices and all. I likely am just avoiding change but I've never been very outgoing or adventurous and I'm certainly not very up on any true IT stuff other than if it has a keyboard I can type.

I bought a mac laptop almost 2 years ago. I haven't had any trouble with it. Even is correct, it's not the end all. They have their issues. But, they are a nice machine. Apple does a good job in building a user interface for non computer geeks. However, the computer geeks sometimes have problems un learning the Windows stuff... (I being one of them)

I can see that point. I don't necessarily think there's anything wrong with macs, I just get tired of all the smug "oh I got a mac. us mac users are sooooooo much better off than you windows users" comments every time a computer thread comes up. Both machines have their high and low points.
