Dreaming of long Summer evenings, I've been working on filling my trout boxes. Recently, I was looking at hooks for emerger patterns and stumbled across the nice looking Tiemco 212Y. Unfortunately, I couldn't find it anywhere as it is not sold in the USA, probably not outside Japan as Google turned up next to nothing.

Turns out, the "Y" stands for Yamame which seems to be the stream-resident life history Oncorhynchus masou. When it is sea-run, it's referred to as Sakuramasu or "Cherry Trout". I read they are very selective, hence the fine wire emerger hook.

Luckily, my in-laws are Japanese and thought nothing of sending me a few boxes. I got them today and they are fantastic. Just perfect for Klinkhammers and other suspended type emerger patters. It has a flat spot high on the shank with a big descending gap. There's a similar Partridge but I think I prefer the Tiemco. It's a shame that Tiemco doesn't bring these into the US.

Here's a pic with a side by side of a 2487 and another of a quick Klink I tied up.

Thomas,
If that style and shape of hook gets your interest, check out the new hook from Gamakatsu, C15-BV VERTICAL-eye barbless. One of a kind, having the deep bend you mentioned, plus a flat eye, which I believe is VERTICAL in orientation to the shank.
You can see them at www.feather-craft.com The product # is TA408, in sizes 12 through 18.

I've been fly fishing for trout and steelhead for over 45 years now, and eyeball to eyeball emerger fishing in shin deep water is some of the most technical, challenging, and rewarding fishing to be had. Maybe I'll see you around the reed beds up at Chopaka sometime...

I also like to looks of the hook as well as the fine wire.
Unfortunately any fish larger than 14 inches will bend out the wire.

Too bad Tiemco doesn't make the hook a bit stronger. But they made it for Yamame's and those rarely get bigger than 12 inches...
