Fished the north end in May 2008, not much beach action more a boat show. Inshore half days or full day out 20 miles for sails. Only did 2 half days for inshore caught fish but nothing crazy. Feel free to pm fore more details if you want. Amazing place and look forward to future trips!

Edit-- where are you heading?

Not sure, my wife was down there last year and wants to go back but I think it is on the north end.

Start saving your money for a guide! I have tried a fair amount my last two trips to catch fish from the beach (Quepos, Samara, Dominical), and although I am sure a person could find success, I did not. It is very difficult to get your gear past the surf, and if you are flyfishing, pretty much not possible unless you find a rocky outcropping.

The Guides will run 400/ 500 for a 1/2 day- Rooster fish and snapper. 700/1000 for a full day, with a full day you can get off shore to the sail fish and marlin.

All the famous water is on the south end but there is good water to the north. Get some more info so we can help.
Potrero Beach is where we are staying, it's almost due west of Liberia.

I fished out of Pla ya del Coco with northpacifictours.com a little to the north Potrero. Hire a boat and go offshore for sails or inshore roosters and jacks.
For a side trip go to Volcan Rincon de la Vieja north of Liberia for zip line, inner tube float, hike to a waterfall, volcanic sonna mud bath hot spring. We also did a side trip to Nicaragua and a live volcano there too. Nicaragua is very different from Costa Rica, very poor and the kids where relentless with panhandling/ begging, if your going to a resort they should have a list of day trips and excursions. Have fun!!!

Sailfish are in season in Los Suenos and Quepos during Feb/Mar. In Guanacaste the sailfish are there in July and August. You might want to look at the Tarpon fishing in Cano *****. This one is on my short list. Season is Dec to June I think.

I was in Costa Rica in December pretty close to where you will be staying. Not sure how this will change for the months you are there, but this was my experience...

I fished a few days off the beaches and hooked into several fish. If you can find spots where you can cast into deeper water off the rocks and other structure, you can probably be successful with the snappers, jacks, etc. and if you are really lucky you might find a rooster which was my goal but it never happened. Fishing off the sandy beaches is probably more difficult although I did see some fish when I was snorkeling, but I was targeting structure when I was actually fishing and that's where I got hookups.

I weaseled my way onto a boat one day and we went and threw giant poppers at sails. If you can afford to charter an offshore boat then you should definitely do that. That was probably the coolest thing I've ever done. It was my understanding that there are billfish and/or dorado in the area year round, although some months are better than others. If/when I do it again, I'm going to try and find a local to take us out in their panga and do some inshore stuff, mainly roosters. Another thing I thought would have been fun and not as expensive as chartering a boat was to rent a kayak and fish out of that. There are some places that rent legit pedal-powered fishing kayaks, but I never got around to that.

Also, I didn't do this, but the guy I fished for sails with was going the next day to fish for Machaca in some river. The way he was describing it sounded really fun. Wish I knew which rivers had them, but it shouldn't be too hard to research. You might try to put that on your list too.

Here is the link to the report I posted about my trip in December. Hope this helps. You will have a blast I'm sure.

The owner of the charter company I work for out of Westport just bought a 29' boat and established business in Costa Rica. Sure hope he doesn't make me go down there to deck hand, that would just suck ;)
Roosters and Dorado can't hold a candle over Rezzies and Cutties!!!
Sailfish over Tuna!!!!
