Dam Removal On Middle Fork Nooksack

1240 Views 6 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Chris Johnson
This project would open up around 15 miles of spawning habitat for salmon steelhead and bull trout. The dam is for water diversion only, not flood control, power or irrigation. It diverts water via an underground aqua duct to lake whatcom were the pulp mill used to get their water ( at one time they used 50 million gals a day), now they use it to keep the lake flowing. It will be replaced with a structure that does not impede fish passage. Any pressure you can bring to bear would be helpful. I will find out to whom you should direct you comments and edit this post.

This is one of those things that nobody really seems to be against, but that never rises up to the level of "we need to get this done" and thus, never has money to make happen.

But it's a completely useless dam and blocks good fish habitat. It's exactly the kind of thing that should come down.

Watch DamNation on Netflix if you haven't seen it already.

If folks really want to do something to aid the salmonids found in the middle fork end the water diversion.

As much as we as species have tried to alter mother nature it remains the case that survival of salmon requires water!

That's a good point, I wonder just how much the diversion is actually used any more. @Chris Johnson do you know the answer to that? I was under the impression that it wasn't much. But I don't know that I'm basing that off of any actual data.
I don't know how much water is diverted, some still is for sure. Bellingham's water supply (lk. Whatcom), has problems and they use that water to keep it flushed, in theory anyway. Too many rich folk living around the lake. Regardless, I don't think Smalma's idea would be to popular around Belli-wash.

We're all rich bud.
We're all rich bud.
In a larger sense, we are for sure.
