Emu feathers? If so, for what patterns.

Nice for wooly buggers. Crayfish also. I bought some at the farmers market and died them.

I bought some and then couldn't figure out what to do with them. I guess you could palmer them through some buggars. They seem a bit stiff - don't think they would make good winging.

Emu feathers are not uniform. Some have stiff spiky barbs but others are perfect for wrapping buggers. This is the kind of emu feather you wanat

I would dye them for steelhead flies. Use a warm or cold dye bath.

Here is a use for emu. Last year I did some testing and it worked out great. I hate deer hair (allergies), so I looked for something different. The stiff part of the feather works great in place of deer hair on these wakers.

Used emu feathers for aquatic worms - trimmed off the palmered flue on the top and bottom. The fish didn't object.
There is a lot of variation in the stiffness/thickness of the racus so you do want to select your feathers if you can.
The hackle fibres make an interesting addition to a dubbing blend to get some 'leggy' bits in the mix.
