Does anyone have a Hardy JLH 89?

1454 Views 9 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Stuart_Stringer
Last fall I had some items stolen, and a couple were Hardy reels. I have three spools remaining, and I'm pretty sure they are/were to my JLH 89. However, I'm not sure. I'm trying to find someone who might have a JLH 89 on which they will let my a spool to see if it is indeed for the JLH 89. Or, at least perhaps measure your spool, and we can compare notes to see if they match...?

I know it's an odd request, but I've contacted Pure Fishing (who now owns Hardy), and they say they don't have the technical specs for that reel or the spool, so they can't help. I've contacted a well-known West coast reel repair person, and he doesn't the specification data, either.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hello Richard, I have a JLH 8/9 and can give dimensions as you require .The outside spool with winding knob is 3 3/4" while the inside with small notch for line is 3 3/16". Let me know of any other dimensions required. Cheers, Craig B.
J.L.H. was James Leighton Hardy. Cheers, Craig B.

HElloRichard, The dimensions given on Spey pages are most likely more accurate than ones in my answer. I will cut and paste from Spey Pages- Rim diameter 3.733"; back wall of spool 3.236"; inside width .725".Hope this helps. Cheers, Craig B.

The one I have was purchased new in 1993 from Eskape Anglers,"BryantFreeman", Riverview , N.B..It was my Atlantic Salmon reel for twenty odd years. Have moved to a switch rod with a Bougle reel.As yet untested. The JLH caught and landed some great memories. Cheers

Thanks, man! Shoot, I measured mine with a tape measure; looks like I'll need to find a micrometer somewhere...
I have one as well. I work in Seattle if you want to meet up and try a fit up.

Such awesome reels. Great drag range for a clicker reel. I use mine on a 5wt Spey. I always have an eye out for one of the bigger salmon models... now those are the straight business!
