While most will agree with the statement, while fishing for steelhead, "The fly doesn't matter." What do you think?
I'd agree with that mostly but when the statement is truely considered I'd have to say I don't agree at all.
Water type, temperature and visibility, affects my selection. How I choose to fish a fly, or even how does a fly fish will affect my selection, what kind of line system do I have on or available to me? In the end I'd have to say if trout fishing is "Match the Hatch" then steelheading is "Match the conditions"
With all that said, for swinging I believe I can meet most conditions with a small box of flies.
So what do YOU think? And if you agree conditions dictate, what types of flies do you like for what types of conditions?
Thanks for your input,
James.
