its been awhile since i have had any worthwhile duck reports but this weekend sure turned things around. the nice cold weather and winds brought ducks down from AB and concentrated them on the open water.
Sunday I had a great hunt with my godfather and his son Peter. we were hunting the columbia and had some steady action all morning. lots of ducks in the area but most of the birds we killed were in groups of 2-6. could have shot a ton of widgeon but we opted to hold out for mallards and greenheads at that. That lasted quite awhile until we had a pair of hens work into the decoys and as the right hand bird slid across the decoys in front of us I spotted something on its leg. immeadiately i told pete to shoot that bird. He stood up and folded it nicely while saying, "Dave, thats a hen." i said, "yeah but she is banded on her left leg." and when the dog brought her back, she sure enough was. I am pretty sure it was a local bird with a 1797 prefix but it may just be this years bird from AB.
we ended up with 21 mallards(20 greenheads) around 1030 before having a quick quail hunt in the howling wind to finish out our day.
hope everyone is enjoying this weather as much as i am. :thumb:
