I need to get out to the Dungeness River this weekend to take some photographs. I'm very much hoping to turn it into a weekend camping trip with my fiancee (with some SRC fishing liberally mixed in), but from the looks of things all of the reservable camp sites are already booked. All the federal stuff is first come, first served, but it's a long way to go with no guarantee we'll get a spot. If we're not going to find a place to set up a tent, I can just do the photo assignment as a day trip. I'm just trying to avoid driving out there Friday evening only to have to turn around and drive home late that night.

Does anyone have any insight as to what my chances are of getting a car camp spot somewhere between the Dosewallips area and Heart of the Hills/Elwha? The closer to the Dungeness, the better. I work til 5 on Friday in Northgate, so best case I would be getting out there sometime after 8 pm. How fast do the federal sites fill up?

My parents stayed at heart of the hills a month ago and there were plenty of spaces on saturday. Granted, that was very early in the season.

My dad called the rangers stations before they left and got some good information from them, asking the same questions.

Having been there numerous times, I can't say I've ever seen the campground where the Dungeness and Graywolf come together being full.
Though not cheap, John Wayne marina has tent sites.

Salt Creek is very nice. County campground. Right on the Straits.

Salt creek fills up fast this time of the year. Graywolf campground is a bit more rustic and is first come, first served

There's a small privately owned and operated campground just across the road from the Lake Leland boat launch.
Does Sequim Bay State Park have camping? Yes. Some sites may be available on a first come, first served basis.

I think we'll head up the 101 and just hit each site starting at Dosewallips. Worst case, the John Wayne Marina sites are still open. A little too developed for my tastes (I'd rather be backpacking frankly), but flush toilets and a nearby restaurant certainly won't generate any complaints from the fiancee. Looks like some good SRC water around there, too...
