Sad, but there isn't much of a kind side to Mother Nature. We roped one that went through the ice on a pond years ago - we got it out, almost wore-out 2 cutting horses doing it, but the cow still didn't make it. Winter takes a toll on the unfit, inattentive, and unlucky.

We lost 21 elk in a very similar situation here in Pagosa Springs in December of 2014. Winter is unforgiving in the high country.
