I'll be spending next week in Tumwater for a training seminar. Hope to fish nearby as evenings will be free. I enjoy small streams, lakes, ponds. Should I take my pontoon? Any recomendations? Anyone like to join me?

Hi Gary,

You have several options. The little D runs through Tumwater and you can fish at Pioneer Park or other accesses farther upstream. Munn Lake, also in Tumwater, was set as a catch-and-release lake as of this spring; it may be warm for trout (though maybe not in the evening), but that lake also has bass, bluegills, and other warmwater species. Similarly, Black Lake is close by with stocked trout and warmwater fishes. Farther afield, you could head to Blue Creek (Cowlitz River - about 45 minutes from Tumwater); there is a chance for steelhead and the first searuns are making an appearance. You could also head up to the Staircase section of the North Fork of the Skokomish (in Olympic National Park - about an hour from Tumwater) to tussle with some rainbows. Several beaches in the South Sound and Hood Canal offer opportunities for searuns, but how well they will fish depends on the tides. Normally, I would be happy to show you some options but unfortunately, I have friends visiting next week and have already committed to being tour leader (Hoh, Mt. Rainier, Mt. St. Helens) for my visitors.

What steve said. The deschutes is a good choice. Its close and pontoon friendly if you can get someone to take you upstream. You can start at Rich road and float down to Pioneer park or down to the falls. Also you can float from Military road down to pioneer if you have a day. If only a few hours hit Munn lake with the pontoon or follow the deschutes and fish where you can.

Regards,

Aaron

So is Tumwater kinda like that old John Denver song: "Saturday night in Toledo Ohio"? it's like being nowhere at all: they have entertainment to dazzle your eyes; go down to the bakery...and watch the bread rise..."??
