I'm looking for suggestions on what to use to for putting eyes on cone heads. They have a little adhesive on one side but not near enough to keep the eyes on in moving water and fly casting (in my opinion). As much time as it took to put them in, I'd like the eyes to stay there permanently, not so much because I think they catch more fish, but because they look cool and because I spent a lot of time putting them in.

Zap a Gap...tried that last time and I wasn't real impressed with the results. I might have used too much...it might be one of those things where less is more.

Anybody have any idea?

Have you tried applying a couple of coats of Hard as Hull, or something like that to seal them on? If they're flat I'd try going over the entire eye, but if they're rounded eyes I usually just go around the base to bond them. So far it's worked well on the bucktails I've made and trolled.

Goop in the original or various other formulations does a solid job in attaching eyes to flies. You will have a harder time adhering eyes to cone heads if the coneheads are not predrilled for eyes (for example, cross-eyed cones by Spirit River). If you are working with traditional coneheads, I would attach the eyes to the body of the fly, not to the slick metal surface of the conehead.

I've used acrylic gel medium from my art supplies. Its cheap, nearly invisible when dry and it sticks them on very well. Dries to a smooth rubbery finish. Way better tan zap a gap or superglue or hard as nails. One blast from a hairdryer and its dry to the touch or leave over night to dry. Put the gel medium in a squeeze bottle with a fine tip and you have an easy applicator otherwise a dubbing needle works well.

My 2 cents

maybe some people shouldnt abbreviate with uncommon things such as "SR" now that i look back at i could assume it means spirit river becasue thats the manufacture of what i posted. the fish skulls are really cool, but the cone heads have more weight if your wanting for the fly to have a faster drop on the pause.
