Rosters "on the fly"?

Those are indeed awesome roosterfish. However, for the sake of those anglers that fish hard and pay their dues to catch grande roosters on the fly, I'd like to make a comment....
Posting photographs of anglers with big roosters, with fly rods visible in the background, with Sage hats on etc...I can't help but to feel that it diminishes the significance of catches made by fly anglers that catch these fish the hard way... On cast flies.
As a frequent visitor to fly fishing boards I know that a reader doesn't always read the whole post and often goes right to the fish pictures. Had I done so in this case the implication would have been that these roosterfish were caught while fly fishing. But such is not the case. They are bait caught. And that is a very different thing than fly fishing.
I'm no purist. I enjoy all types of fishing. And to each his own. However, I simply can't understand why a fly angler would pin a baitfish to the end of his leader for any reason. I did read in the post that these guys didn't have a trolling rod along. But I also find it hard to believe that the panga captain did not have one of his own, or at least had access to one so that these fish could have been teased with hookless baits and cast to.
But yet I digress....

Hey whatever your name is,

I wrote the full story in detail and explained everything you didn't like , It's not my fault I didn't catch the fish the way you think I should have, it's also not my fault you look at pictures instead of reading first....get over it...and have a nice day.

Cb3fish....Please note that I did not condemn you personally. Nor was i hostile. I am however passionate about fly fishing for roosterfish. And as such I have a very well defined opinion on how you chose to fish. I'm well within my rights to post those opinions.
Also, I did read your entire post. That's my point. Had I not taken the time to read it in it's entirety I would have had no indication that these fish were caught on bait. And considering that these photos are posted on boards dedicated to fly fishing...well, the assumption would be that these fish were indeed caught while fly fishing. And that is not the case.
If you're going to fly fish...fly fish. If you're going to soak bait, why not use conventional tackle?
Also, you did not provide an explanation as to why your panga captain did not have a trolling rod for you to use as a teaser rod. Considering that he is in the business of conventional tackle angling as well, it seems very hard to believe he didn't have one available. Also, considering that you were there fishing for an extended period of time I have to assume that you never requested one. And that you chose to not even try to tease these fish in for a legit fly cast. I find that confusing.

What ever your name is,

You love to cast flies to Rooster fish I take it? good for you.

I went to Loreto again this year to fly fish for Dorado -Sailfish and Marlin like I do every year, There wasn't any Sardines to chum with, So my buddy and I decided to catch Rooster fish , any dam way we wanted too, I don't even own a bait rod, I 'am and I do call my self a fly fisherman, and My boat Captain don't have a dam thing to do with my fishing or this post. Also if I decide to tie on a bare hook and drag some bait around, that's exaclyt what I 'am goin to do..... Now If i would have posed for a picture with a fly rod and the fish and told somebody i caught them on a fly...That would of just been wrong, I didn't do that, I even said in my post we tried to figure out a way to get them on a cast fly.

Now why don't you slowly back away from your puter, take a big breath of air and relax, Next time you see me post, just don't read it! Again get over it, and have a nice day...PS I wasn't trying to be Sarcastic, it just pisses me off that somebody else wants me to fish the way they do, and If I don't they are confused. and I don't care in what manner you fish, and if you wrote a post, I wouldn't judge you as long as you was legal.

cb3fish...my name is Lance Peterson. Click on my avatar and you will see that. I live and fish in Baja California Sur year round.
It's noteworthy that you have elected to be so defensive towards a simple posting of my opinion. And that's all it is...an opinion.
Ok, there were no sardinas to chum with. We have had the same troubles here at East Cape. But have I fished bait on my fly rod? No. That's my perogative as it is yours to do the opposite.
I just don't understand why a fly fisherman would fish bait on a fly rod in lieu of trying to catch them via bait and switch teasing: A technique that is utilized by roosterfishers from Baja to Peru. And please don't dodge the question, why didn't you even try? We both know that the trolling gear was available for you for use to use as a teaser rod if you had requested it.
Again you have failed to answer my question. Why not try to really fly fish? Is it that important to you to simply catch a fish on a fly rod? Even if it's means not casting a fly or even using a fly at all? I'm sorry, but I'm not going to give you, a self described fly fisherman, accolades for doing that.
There are many fly anglers that pour time, sweat ,and tears into trying to catch a big rooster legitimately on the fly. Why? Because doing so is a noble endevour. Catching one on bait, on a fly rod...is in a word, lame. As is doing the same with a permit or a steelhead or any other esteemed fly rod fish.
Throw stones if you must. But that's how I feel.

Lance,

Why is it so imporant to you why we chose to fish the way we did? You didn't read my post very good , did you? I did explain that aspect of my trip in there, Lance I 'am a flyfisherman, I even got a grand slam on my first attemp, I 'am a excellent caster, I also tie flies by the thousands. It seems to me your the one trowing stones and have a big problem with my post. I didn't ask for your approval when I made this post, and if you don't like my post, stop reading it. get over it man. I 'am done with this. And no I 'am not going to fall to my knees and beg for forgiveness, I was fishing and I had a ball, and if you didn't like ....get a life

As a complete outside observer, I have a question? Carl? Why did you post your report on this forum about flyfishing saltwater when you used bait? Was it to talk about the troll caught and cast to dorado and sails? If so I think that you could have copy and pasted that part and left out the rest about the Roosters. It almost seemed that your post was an advertisement.

As for catching roosters using the flyrod and bait well if it works, I'm certainly not opposed to it, in fact I'd prefer to do it that way versus using a gear rod, but I see Lance's point as well at some point after loosing count I think I would have been real tempted to find a way to tease them in and cast to them. Althought when your into it it's tough to stop catching fish to try something that is potentially less productive.

I think Lance just wanted to make sure that people understood that that size of Rooster is a true prize on the fly rod and he just wanted to make sure that lazy readers understood they were bait caught.

Ira,

I understand exactly where your coming from. OK we caught some really giant Roosters on bait now lets try and get them on a cast fly.....WE DID TRY...we didn't have Roosters busting on bait, or see Roosters swimming around....IT was very frustrating to say the least....I even said in my report....I DON"T KNOW ANYTHING about Roosters...never been after Roosters before in my life......I don't even own a bait rod, and don't plan on buying one...Next year if we have chum, maybe we can chum some up? maybe not.....next year I sure won't post any report either way... I thought I was just being a nice guy, and sharing some of my fun.. as for as an advertisement, I don't have anything to sell. I also can't belive you have to judge somebody for haveing fun. Last time I checked, I can fish any dam way I want to, and I said that in my post...GET OVER IT..I hope that somebody just deletes this post...In the future if you see my name on any kind of post....please just skip it....PS don't get Lance started again OK? it took him about 4 posts to figure it out, maybe you will get in one? Have a great Day

Sorry Carl,

I believe I would have had fun the same way and while down in La Paz after casting my arm off to Roosters that didn't take I finally trolled a fly while the captain trolled live bait. The live bait worked and I caught a great rooster on the meat pole and the whole time I was thinking "I sure wish I had put that live bait on my fly rod." So I get it, sorry if I sounded judgemental. The fly rod is just more fun. I also posted a picture of that fish and if people hadn't read carefully I see how they could have assumed I caught it while flyfishing.

Your right about posting your good time makes me think Loreto might be a great place to visit, I as of yet have not quite hit the dorado bait big small or indiffent and to date I have not landed one on the fly rod.

Sorry again.

Ira,

Its takes a good man to say he's sorry, I wasn't looking for that however, but thanks you anyway. I promise to never pass judgement on you either, Now after all that has been said. I 'am a dyed in the wool fly guy, I tie flies commercially, I fly fish all over the US, Mexico and other countries, That Mexico trip was the first time I ever trolled bait, It was actually a lot of fun, however it wasn't very rewarding, I wanted to get them on a cast fly. Next year we will bring the necessary teasing gear to be able to aid us in that,

Carl
