This is probably a long shot, but I'm going to Puerto Vallarta for spring break and was wondering if I should even bother bringing my fly rod. Is there any shore fishing? I can't afford to hire a boat and go offshore. If anybody has any info, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,

I was in PV last march, and saw baitfish and bird activity right off the beach. I didn't have my rod. There's also a nice point just south of town. I'd say it's worth it to bring your rod and a handful of the basics: clousers, deceivers, in olive and white and, of course, chart and white. I met a ****** gear chucker who said he caught a 10# mackerel. You can expect sierra macks, maybe some ladyfish, and some yellow tail/finned things, sorta like tuna, but about 9" (which is all I ever caught in the Sea of Cortez on a previous trip). Corbina and perch may be involved, too. That's about all I know, and I'm sure there's many more experienced answers heading your way.

I haven't been down there, but I always bring a rod if there is a chance to bend it. You never know when fish will blitzkrieg baitfish on the beach. There was just a conversation about that location on the Mexico side of Virtual Fly Shop Bulletin board.

It might help, good luck.
