So my Lady and I went out fishing and camping this last weekend up at local river. We left camp in the afternoon and headed up the river. We stopped by a few ripples and a hole or two when along comes a fellow fly fisherman and his two dogs. I could see him coming about a hundred yards or so down river. He did not stop to fish at all, it was obvious he wanted to get past us. So I reeled my line in and said "Hello". He asked if we were heading up or down the river. I advised him that we were heading up, the same way he was heading. After a little small talk he told me that he mostly just hikes casting a couple times here and there and that he would hike awhile befor actually fishing. Me being fairly new to the area and fly fishing I thought that was the curtious thing for him to do. So he takes off up river and my lady and I keep on fishing, slowly hitting spots on the river.
About a half hour later we catch up to him about fifty yards or so away. He see's us and quickly moves ahead. I think maybe we are moving to fast for him. So I say to my lady maybe we should stop to have lunch and let him get far enough ahead so were not to pressure this fellow. Forty five or so minutes later we head up the river more. By the way we were having one of the best catching days we have had on this stretch of the river. We hike for miles stoping at every chance we can get a cast away. When suddenly we hear dogs barking. We stop and look around and realize it was coming from up the river on the opposite side then we were on. So we continue about five more paces and I look up and here is this fellow we ran into earlier briskfully heading our way wearing just his boots! Nothing else! He did not notice us at first so I made some noise. I also told my gal that there is a naked guy ahead of us and to stop! When he realized it was people he put his shorts on really fast. We stopped and waited untill he was close enough to pass us and proceeded by him quickly. About fifty yards past we noticed that campsite on the other side of the river were there were a few people and dogs sitting on the high bank just watching this all go down. I did not know what to think and my girlfriend was in shock. We fished a little bit more not catching anything and still wondering what this guy was doing out there buck naked. So we headed to the road to hike back to camp. We did not want to run into this wierdo again. All and all a great day on the river. A little wierd. Like I said we are a little green to the area. Most of our fishing has been done on the Olympic Peninsula or in my ladies case South East Alaska. I am from Seattle but have not been in the Cascades for quite some time.
My question is this normal practice in the Cascades these days? If so do I need a permit to do it? (JK)
