I know most people here probably tie their own flies and those that buy their flies probably support their local flyshop, but I am interested in comments about internet flies. Anyone have any experience with Big Y Fly company, Blue fly cafe, or fly deal flies?

fly deal flies has dries starting at 43 cents and nymphs at 53 cents, but I have never bought anything from them so are wondering about quality? I have bought from big y, but I had to be on the lookout for quality. I hear blue fly cafe is reliable with consistent quality. I do not have any relation to any company, and am not trying to shill any one of the above. I am hoping to find nymphs at around half a buck and steelhead patterns for under a buck.

I havent odered from big y in a while, but what I liked was their epoxy trout minnows for 70 cents. What I disliked was I got some caddis pupa (tim fox kind) that had the chenile tied down with THREAD instead of wire. Big fly was good with customer service tho and replaced them (which they had better do given the cirumstance!)

I am really interested in any feedback about fly deal flies given that they seem to be the cheapest :clown: (Yeah I am a clown for wanting 43 cent flies that are tied by people in Africa and sold by a US company, as opposed to $2 flies tied by people in Africa sold by a US company to another us company (local fly shop) who I buy from :clown::

I understand Hill's discount flies uses only the top brand materials (like Daiichi hooks) but I am obviously not the "top shelf" type of guy.

What you need to do is find somebody that ties flies and then be nice to them(ply them with beer and a few supplies) and just maybe they will tie some up for you.

I have a few such buddies here because my tying sucks big time.

And no I still haven't used up what I have gotten in the past.

Another vote for Hill's Discount Flies. Quality is excellent, service and delivery are top notch. I usually get delivery in 3 days. Prices are reasonable and probably cheaper than tying your own.

If you're talking about flydealer.com (K Matlock) I've had good success with them. Hill's is also good. And yeah, there are some of us who would rather buy than tie...30some years of it and I've never tied a fly. Not about to either. a) it ain't cheap b) I'd still rather fish in the rain or dark than stay home and tie c) vices are for geeks

No, have never heardof flydealer.com, will have to look into them. Was talking about flydealfies dot com

Internet flies can suck, but, but the flies you buy in the shop are probably tied in africa too, just the big companies keep tight reign on QA. Find a good quality place, stick with it.

Internet flies suck 99% of the time based on my experience.
I buy AND tie. From my experience, spend more and get better flies. Even if you don't get as many. I don't use half the shit I buy anyway. Spent four hours fishing this weekend and used two flies. Would've used one, but I got greedy with "one last cast" and stuck the first one in a tree. Tied on another and promptly did the same thing. Reeled up and called it a day. And, yes, I caught fish. Lots of them.

Thanks to yet another upcoming birthday, my eyesight and steadiness are no longer sufficient to tie small dries well. Instead of taking hours to tie a dozen size 18 Adams or BWOs, it's a lot better use of my time to simply buy them. I rarely break a fly off or lose it to vegetation, so a dozen store-bought flies can last me several years.

I tie about 90% of my flies, but have relied on Hill's a couple of times for sizes and patterns that I didn't want to mess with. Quality was solid. Caddis bodies were tapered like a mayfly and I would have changed a few colors, but all-in-all I was pleased for the price. One thing to consider is the quality of the hook. Most, if not all, of Hill's flies are tied on Daiichi's. Bummer to hook the fish of your lifetime and lose it do to a cheap hook.

Hill's will be doing a clearance sale the last week of August on about 1000 dozen flies that will start around $3 a dozen and go up to $5 depending on the pattern. Most are tied on Daiichi Hooks and some are not, they will be listed so you know which ones are which.
Enjoy
