Hey, I'm looking for a new book to read and was just wondering what everyones favorite book involving fly fishing is. Could be either informational or just for fun, I don't care.

One of my favorite writers about fly fishing in recent years has been Paul Schullery. He is a historian by training, a fly fisherman by avocation, and a great story teller. You can learn a lot about the history and places of fly fishing, especially in the northern Rockies from his books.

For pure light entertainment, it's hard to beat John Gierach.

All-time funniest fly fishing story - On Dry Cow Fishing As a Fine Art, Rudyard Kipling.

Most heart-warming fishing story - The River God, Roland Pertwee.

Both are short stories that often are part of older books with compilations of best fishing stores.

High lakes by Lafontaine is a must. Educational on so many levels, plus he adds great personal stories as well.

I really didn't enjoy The River Why at all. It always surprises me seeing so many people who like it.

Sorry, Nick. Another fan of The River Why here, and generally of ALL of David James Duncan's work, most of it is not fly fishing related. Also, I loved everything I read by Roderick Haig-Brown, and that means all of his stuff! Non fiction: Robert Travers has a ton of great stories, and more instructional, The Curtis Creek Manifesto, graphic novelisque that it is, and lastly The Soft Hackled Fry by Sylvester Nemes. Oh Wait, one more, Fishing The Sea Run Cutthroat Trout by Les Johnson. That'll get you started.

It just occured to me... the River Why is not the book I was thinking of when I made my earlier post. I know I read the River Why I just don't really remember if I liked it or not. The one I was thinking of is A Good Life Wasted I believe it's called. Was not a fan of that one at all.

I tried to read a couple of books by this author. I just couldn't get into them. When I read something I like to have the book reach out and grab what I reading. His books just didn't do that for me. Sorry, don't remember what they were.
