i have been tying flies for trout fo some time now but since i fish fo steelhead also i would like to tie some spey flies too. I was wounderin what would be a good substitute fo heron. Thanks fo da inforation on tha subject any of you response will be appraised greatly. :??

Hello.You're local fly shop should have spey hackle available.The package just say's "spey hackle".It is a heron substitute.I don't know what type of bird they come from but they tie quite nicely,just make sure you soak them in water for a few minutes prior to tying as they are pretty stiff.You can also use schlappen hackle.I also found spey hackle at GI Joe's available in every color you need.

Blue-Eared Pheasant is the best heron substitute I've found; very long fibers on long feathers with stems that are not too thick to actually wrap around a hook without soaking or surgery. The one draw back is that they do not come in colors that I know of as the natural color is quite dark. Skins are expensive, but better shops will have small packages of selected feathers (particularly tying-oriented shops).
