In the 1970's my main backpacking/scrambling buddy was a fellow named Bill Long who was a member of the 10th Mountain Army Division in the World War II. It was mainly made up of outddoor/climbing enthusiasts from the pacific northwest. Many of those individuals hung out/climbed at the Snow Creek craigs/Enchatments near Leavenworth. Bill was one of those individuals along with Fred Beckey, Dee Molenaar, Prater brothers, etc. When Bill and I were hiking to our distinations, he would often tell tales about the exploits of these mountain men. The physical capabilities of Fred were amazing as some climbers did not want to go on climbing trips with him since he was so fit that he would almost run up the trail to get to the base of a climb. Few fellow climbers could keep up with him. Bill had so many tales about Fred and I was fortune to get a glimpse of his remarkable life.
