I've been fishing for decades but never in a float tube. It seems that here on Fidalgo Island the fishing is very limited but with a float tube it seems it could be spectacular. So a Cumberland tube from Walmart ($180) Redington waders ($120), air pump, net, pfd, and fins. Seems like under $500. I've been looking for used gear with limited success. So before jumping in with both feet (pun intended) I thought I would bounce this off you folks for some guidance. Thanks, Jim

Personally, I wouldn't buy that tube.
I'd put a WTB ad in the classieds section here and try to get something better, like a Fishcat 4.

@Jiminsandiego , Fishcat 4 at cabelas is 229, not much more than what you are currently considering for the Cumberland. Or do as Stonefish recommends and post a WTB ad. Guaranteed there are no less than 10 members with spare float tubes.

ditto what @Stonefish recommends on the float tube. Use care with fins, not all fins are created equal. Suggest perhaps hooking up with a club in the area..... buddy plan the first time out in a tube. They can be tricky entering/exiting the lake.

With what is offered in the current market, Outcast tubes are the only way to go, unless your desire is for a light-weight tube that packs easily into remote lakes. Don't scrimp on a float tube; you'll be disappointed. I have float-tubed for years, ever since 1964 when I built my first float tube back in Montana. Feel free to PM if you have questions.

Wow. Thanks for all the input. Fishcat 4 is about $50 bucks more than the Cumberland. Both have their fanbase. Fishcat fans say good things about quality and customer service. Cumberland is 4 lbs heavier but has about 50 lbs more "payload". Cumberland does come with straps to carry it with. I was sold on the Cumberland until I created this thread. Now I'm leaning toward the Fishcat 4. Thanks folks

For tubing I much prefer light weight neopreme waders. You can generally find something like Cadis brand for around $50.
Fins are the big thing. I have some outcast fins and they are kind of OK. I tried some Force fins and they are so much better. A bit pricey but worth every dime. If I tubed more than I do I would drop the dollars on a pair in a heart beat.

Never try to walk forwards when wearing fins while in the water! You will face plant so fast you won't believe it!
