I am off to Cabo in 4 weeks. I have tied up liots of flies but mostly 5" bait in light brown/ white. I dont have your attention to detail. Mine are down and dirty. What size rod are you bringing with what lines?
8, 10, 12, and 14wt......Will use the 10 and 12 the most..............all (not the 14wt) will have intermediate and all will have sink tips.............will fish mostly sink tips...........flies run from 2" to 9".........will be adding marlin patterns .................get some olive green and something with red

Are you in a boat? I will be on the beach and was going to bring my 8 and 10. I have a floating tropic line for the 10, do you think I can just add some t14?
Pangas and the beach.................down there 7 nites, fish 5 days..................I think the idea of most guys down there is you need the mass in the sink tips to cast the larger flies....I would not want a pure floater in the surf...................... rent a panga........it is worth it

"Just add some t14" to a floating line, and it will be a pain to cast. The line will hinge badly at the tip.

Get a running line and a few shooting heads (intermediate, type 3, fast sinking like LC-13 or t-14) and you'll be in business. The floating lline will start alright for you if you don't want to get another line, but if you want to use a standard line and you can cast any distance at all, it's tough to beat a standard intermediate line when fishing from the beach.

Sage advice. It really is. A person can catch fish from the beach, but the opportunities go up exponentially from the boat.

Kirk, most of the fish one will tie in to on a fly in Cabo from the beach won't require a 10 weight. However, the 10 weight will be much easier to casta line in the wind and to turn over bigger or weighted flies. A floating line would be pretty much worthless when fishing, say, from the beaches on the Pacific Ocean side out by the Solmar and the Finisterra (which is just dang tough to fish, period!), but will work early early morning on the Sea of Cortez side before the wind works up.

Grayone, by the way, those are great looking bugs you're tying! Love those crease flies and those Sea Habit-y lookin' dudes! Do you have cutter for the foam? I've been debating getting one . . . Lik those tandem hook rigs, too! Looks like you're pretty well set up. I just don't see any white/white flies . . . What epoxy are you using?

Denny...............Thanks...........White/white, I should do, thank you. .....Crease flies,I made a foam pattern(use the same pattern on Davis lake for largemouth bass) before I went to Australia a few years ago (queenfish love em'), then cut about 40 or so out.....For the epoxey, if I tint the head (any 5 minute)... If I want them perfectly clear and almost bubble free, I use various rod wrapping epoxey. As a side note...sometimes I get lazy and use 5 minute and have very little yellowing, the flies only seem to last a short time fishing salt and getting nasty fish bites. I leave alot with the guides and start all over again for the next trip.....(retired and have time to tie, plus it's fun)..................Floating lines for poppers, maybe.....but I also like the action from sinkers when fishing poppers..................

I just picked up a cool line for my z axis 8 wt. A rio commpact tropical, intermediate sink tip. it is clear which fades into blue in the head and white running line. The 30' head is designed with beach rooster fishing in mind. Cant wait to try it!
I have also built a system for the 10 wt. 200' of amnesia, 100' or Rio stiff mono running line, a rio "big boy' 25' 400g shooting head, and some various other t14 heads that I made. Should be interesting!

I also have the rio tropical..........nice line.....................You might try connecting your amnesia directley to your Rio bigboy, bet it would bomb................but your t14 imay not cast well if it is not about 25 feet long.......................to me the amnesia is a running line. Also unless you are casting over 100 feet, I would cut the amnesia in half(save the other 1/2)..............the more running line you have .......is just all the more drag and pressure once a fish gets into the backing..................Whatever........do have a great time

The crease flies are colored with prismacolor permanent markers from craft stores....any permanent marker will do if you like the color. I then coat them with softex (not sure if it is even necessary) or I coat them with cheap glitter fingernail polish.
The poppers are foam heads from Edgewater, you can get other brands. I use white, black, blue and green. Normally I cover the exposed foam with a cheap glitter fingernail polish that matches the skirt color or head tape color.
