My Danvise arrived today. I've been eyeing them for a while, watching for the right deal. Found one in a damaged box on eBay for $66. Used Bing Cashback w/Paypal to get $5 off, so it was $61 shipped.
It arrived today, and I spent most of the day tying flies on it. I got "Rotary Fly Tying Techniques" from my local library as well, and did a lot of reading and experimenting with the vise based on stuff I read out of the book.
I know some folks don't care for the Danvise. I like it. It works well, adjusts easily and holds the hook really solidly. I have mine setup so I can easily wind stuff on it, but can also stop it at any point along the way.
The complaints I've heard about it don't really seem to apply, or at least don't bother me. The Delrin plastic may be a bit ugly, and I'm sure it doesn't feel as slick as a machined piece of steel, but it's a good vise, and despite being primarily plastic, it feels pretty solid. It reminds me a bit of a Glock, actually, as I hear many of the same kinds of complaints about them.
