I got to fish a few days last weekend in the Okanogan with good friends and with two of my bamboo rods, a 9' SouthBend Cross Doublebuilt that handled some 15-18" browns and rainbows just fine, and a lighter 8-1/2' Phillipson Dry Fly Special that was maybe a little over-gunned against some small brookies we found. Good times.

The fish were really on the red chironomids and my buddies Eric and Rafa even came over and switched rods with me to give it a try…a sneaky way to get them to use a bamboo rod! But unfortunately that 9' Cross DoubleBuilt is not going to win too many devotees with its hefty weight even though it had no problem casting the indicator rig a country mile.

Basically most people have a very narrow view of what constitutes a good rod. Unfortunately they will dismiss any rod that weighs more than they are used to. Moves slower than they are used to or flexes in a different way than they are used to. This is understandable but IMHO somewhat short sighted.
Personally I really like using rods that are outside the norm but still do everything I want them to do. I don't think adjusting your stroke to accommodate a particular rod is a bad thing. Its just part of what makes each day on the water a little different from the last. It's something to look forward to.

Hey Ron,
I have a rod I'm working on that will match your beast! It's a '56 Hardy Rouge River 7/8 wt. tip is short about 7", I'll have to scarf that and is missing several guides and wraps. Tons of intermediate wraps, tiny stripper like guides that I'm going to replace with English snakes, nice white agate stripper and sweet tight blued ferrules. Cork is ok, reelseat is perfect as the writing on the rod. I've got a 3 5/8" Perfect that will match up nicely. Should be ready by spring.
