A Deschutes pattern from John Harken, one-time owner of the Patient Angler in Bend, OR.

hook - TMC 5212 #6
thread - UTC 140 fluoro orange
tail - moose body hair
abdomen - Congo Hair orange
thorax - peacock herl
hackle - rusty dun
wing - elk hair

mash barb, start thread at 60% mark, wrap to bend



clean, stack, measure (gap width past bend) a clump of moose body; tie in, trim butts, cover with thread







tie in CH at 60 % mark; wrap to tail and back, tie off/trim





tie in hackle



tie in peacock, wrap to 80% mark; tie off/trim





wrap hackle thru thorax; tie off/ trim



clean, stack, measure ( tips to tail) a clump of elk hair; tie in, taking a few raps thru the butts to anchor





build up head, whip finish, SHHAN, trim butts

Interesting variant of the Harrop's hairwing dun.
Good question as to which came first. Don't have much info on this one; first mention I saw of the Hairwing Dun was in an article Mr. Harrop wrote for Fly Fisherman in the late 80's.
