Never having caught a smallmouth bass, and dealing with bladder cancer, I figured it was time to check that off my lifelist. I found a what turned out to be a very nice quaint B&B in historic downtown Harper's Ferry. It also happened that the B&B owner also owns the local fly shop, and has a guide service fishing the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers with oar rigged rafts. So I booked the room for the week, and did 4 days of fishing, with a two day pause to do some exploration of Gettysburg and Antietam battlefields. The first two days of fishing were fantastic, 15-20 smallies each day, with lots of bream thrown in for good measure. Most fish were 10 - 12 inches but some larger with the biggest being about 16. The battle field tours were pretty humbling and it was a hard and brutal time in our nations history, and did me good to remind me the sacrifice our ancestors paid. As this was going on, SW West Virginia was getting hammered by storms and severe flooding. While Harpers Ferry avoided that, the rivers were up and the water was severely stained. Luckily for me, there was a plan "B" which involved fishing for Largemouth at a private lake. So, the last two days although not to the original plan, still had us catching a lot of fish. The name of the outfitter is White Fly Outfitter and the B&B is called The Anglers Inn, I can highly recommend both.
