I heard there are a few steelhead in the river now, but last time I checked, it was flowing over 2,000 cfs. I think that's way too high for decent fly fishing. I expect it would be pretty turbid at that height also. Is it worth a 4+ hour drive? Not for me. YMMV.

Camped and fished there last weekend. Water was clear but high. Found plenty of water to swing. Hooked and lost one fish. Its only a couple hour drive for me. You might also consider the OP if it is closer.

The Klickitat is fishing fine. The gearheads, bait boys and bobber heads are getting fish. A little tougher on the fly, but I would rather fish clear high water than dirty low water. Call Rolf @ The Klickitat Trader (509 369-3601) for water conditions and shuttles, if needed. If you drive over and the river is blown you can head 25 or so miles south and east of G'dale and try swinging for summer chinook, steelhead and sockeye below the John Day Dam on the Columbia. Watch out for plunkers though, they usually heave 10-16 ounce weights into the river in their quest for salmonids. Or you could head west and try the "W" rivers. SS
P.S. The Klickitat Trader has some reasonably priced " Diawa" (made in UK) spey rods in stock.
