Heading to the Hoh in a few weeks for an annual steelheading trip and was wondering about the float from Morgan's to Oxbow. I've floated from the park entrance to Morgan's and found it to be an easy float. Anything that I should be aware of in the Oxbow stretch?

Thanks,

Steve

We have a lot of flow right now there could be a log jam about a half mile below Wiloughby creek. It would be a good idea to check back when it gets closer to your outing. It is a great float if you have floated the top you should have no problem. Walk up to the corner at the Oxbow camp ground and pick a line for that one, before you get started. I would also recomend Allens bar for a take out if you are in a drift boat. What kind of watercraft are you using? Bill

Thanks for the replies. We'll be in drift boats, a wood and an aluminum boat. I figured that the recent rains might contribute to another sweeper or log jam. Where is Allen's Bar?

Thanks again,

Steve

Cross the 101 bridge at the Oxbow continue southbound , you will come to a left hand turn lane (hoh-clearwater mainline).Look to your right at at the intersection there is a field and a gravel road on the right hand side of the field. The Allens do charge a modest 5 dollar fee for day use. Its worth it, the DNR does not do any thing to mantain the Oxbow launch.

I floated thru the Oxbow only once because I'm an old man. But here are some photos that are 5 years old, so check it out before going yourself. The photos do not justify how swift it is and some manuevering between boulders to finish. I did it in my 9' pontoon boat, but not sure I would do it again. I remember having to go left and right as you are coming down the shoot about 4 times, then one screaming hard left at the end to avoid the big boulder as you shoot into the water above it.

Overall it's not bad, but it's just small technical moves that could sink you. If you've floated it alot like myself, it's not a super big deal. It's just lining yourself up in the right line and following it. But the Oxbow has changed several times over the years. Best to scout it complete. And remember. A run DOES NOT look the same going down as it does going up. ;)
