I've been messing around with waddington shanks this week and was wondering how it affects the motion of the fly. Do the lead eyes always ride down?

Depends on the size of the shank and the weight of the eyes but more so the materials used and the current it's swimming in. On larger shanks with larger eyes I tie them in below the upturned front loop and on smaller flies I don't find it matters that much. Super big eyes have the tendency to make flies ride on one side or the other if they're not perfectly centered.
