I have heard that some of the best bill fishing is out of Drake Bay. Quite a ways from Jaco. Jaco would not me my first choice for the true CR.

I hate say it but, I have been to Drake a dozen times and didn't wet a line. Something to do with peace in the family.

If you can find sound rocky outcrops, give it a go.

Hope others can be of more help.

Pure Vida!

You might find a beach or two that could be fished from shore but for the most part the jungle goes to the water or is steep banks or cliffs, CR is not known for beach fishing. Also I would start with a 10wt as most fish encountered will be wrecking havoc on a 8wt, hire a panga and do the inshore for jacks and roosters!
Don't know the southern end but the northern end had very limited beaches and needed to fish from boats to get good shots at fish. The panga's are not tha expensive and can be found at all coastal town's, if you look like a fisherman they will find you or the place your staying at will know someone. Good luck, I can't wait to go back some day!

I am also going to be in Puerto Jimenez for 5 days. Any advice? Bringing an 8 weight to sling from the beach.
caught my first pacific sail on a fly from this port. i was there at the 'wrong' time of the year, Christmas, but the captain of the center console found the fish anyway. classic, hookless teasers brought the fish to within 30' of the boat transom, a single splash cast and bamm, away we go. in 2 days, 7 sails and one blue up in the teasers but disappeared. we stayed and fished out of crocodile bay lodge, super people and a great time. also hooked up on rooster's and one wahoo, that didn't last long, but what a first run, impossible to describe but you had best have lots of backing!

oh, if you are looking for billfish, a 12 weight is the minimum. you will be severely undergunned with an 8 weight, even from the beach. these are some tough, mean saltwater critters so be prepared. from the beach a 10 weight would be a far better choice.

Jaco was a blast for Surfing- my favorite waves! Costa Rica has been a bust for me with fishing. I have tried. I have hooked a few roosters from a Panga on a half day out of Quepos and got one big one close to the boat before it spit the hook. Plan on 400 to 600 for a half day.

If the bait is close to shore then there may be opportunity, but the waves tend to break a ways out, much further than I can cast.

If you are in Jaco drive a few minutes north to Los Suenos. I got a couple hours away from the family and tried there. It is a calm water harbor and I know that there are fish present. I think that is your best bet for that area. It is a marina and also the spot to hire a guide (near Jaco).

My big regret is not saving some money before I went down and springing for a couple full days of fishing. It will cost at least 1k a day, but you should have some sweet opportunities at really cool fish.

Oh yeah, and since you are driving south, Uvita appeared to have some potential for good beach action. It was the only beach where I have seen locals chasing Rooster and Snook with poppers from shore. At Marino Ballena park.
