June Anticipation

Hey Gang,

Is it just me, or has all the talk of closures and depressed runs, and yadda yadda yadda stifled enthusiasm around here. June is just around the corner people! Where is that unflinching optimism that is both the defining strength and tragic flaw of the fly fisherperson? Let's see some goddamn summer steelhead flies!

I recently acquired some blue jay and found that it makes a sweet change-up instead of Jungle Cock, I have hope for this one.

That fly has all the requisites. Sinkability, black/red and a little flash...and eyes. Nice fly, can I copy it?

I would be honored. Some of the materials are a little hard to make out in the crappy iPhone photo. Mainly the Gadwall collar. All the others are pretty easy to spot and figure out/imitate. One thing I noticed is that this fly fishes better when tied on an AJ Steelhead Iron (The one in the picture is a Spey). The iron sinks much faster, and I believe is stays down in the swing a little better.

As much as I love skaters and hair wings, June is typically for medium size wiggly black bugs on a sink tip in the swollen runoff flows. Unfortunately not sure where I'm gonna get to fish these fresh ones this year considering the Puget sound closures...
