My guess with this cold weather we're having, if the water is low and clear go with an egg or egg sucking leech pattern to do the trick...
Good luck and keep us posted!

Good luck and let us know how you did. I was going to head down today, but after calling Pritchard's message # decided to hold off. The report was allot of ice on the sides of the river and some ice jams preventing any floating. I plan to make it down this week. Maybe I'll see you there. It's a beautiful river. Sadly the steelhead counts continue to diminish.

Knowledge of the river may be more important, they're sections of that river that you'll rarely catch fish in but may hold a ton of fish.Your looking for common sections, where the fish feed.Typically for steelhead look for long streches of quick moving water thats above or below strong rapids. If the fast movin water has a seam thats ususally where they'll feed ecpeccially if the seam flows near a bank. One thing I think we'll all agree on is... stay deep in the water. If your loosing a bunch of flies on the bottum, it's a good thing.Thats just my opion, but it'll change tomarrow I'm sure.

personally, I've never fished the Kalama, but I can tell you this: the only fly you need is one that you are confidant in. It doesn't matter what that is, just fish whatever fly you are confidant in with whatever technique you are confidant in...you can't go wrong wherever you fish.

This thread reminds me of the only time I have fished the Kalama. It was New Years Eve a couple of years ago. My buddy, the fly purist and historian, and I stopped in at Pritchard's about mid day and got some coffee. My buddy insists that you never leave a local shop without asking about the fly they recommend and then you buy some. He did that again, except the lady showed him a jig! A rule is a rule and he bought a few. Back on the river and he hollars at me to give him a hand. He's fighting a big fish with his 15 ft rod and it is whipping him. After about twenty minutes the fish is gone and I find out the jig is what he hooked it with! So much for purity these days. LOL
