Kamloops B.C. Lakes

I will be fishing a few Kamloops B.C. lakes from the 17th to 21st. I know generally what to use, but any fly suggestions, other than chirps, for this time of the year? What lakes do you like up there? 3 years ago I fished Roche and some small lakes just a 20 minute drive outside of Kamloops.

I liked Peterhope for the scenery when camping there.

other than chirps
Assuming you mean chironomids, it depends on the lake but a few patterns I've had success with are Mikulak sedge, Thom Thumb, floating dragon(fished on a sinker), leaches, scuds, sedge pupa, soft hackles, Carey's specials, pumpkin heads, calibeatis nymph.

I fished Roche two weeks ago and it had a nasty algae bloom that killed the chironomid hatches. Algae blooms normally don't happen for another few weeks but the lake is quickly moving into summer mode.

There is a decent high elevation lake east of Merritt called Hatheume that should still be good. Cookie-cutter 18-20" fish all day when I fished there last year.

Micro-leeches and dragon nymphs seem to be the ticket when there are no chironomids.

Well he is into day two of his trip. I would imagine Roche would be pretty good right now though as the weather has been colder the past couple weeks.

I was up north of Kamloops last weekend, it was cool and wet. The water temp was warmer than the air, but the sedges were coming off anyway, not in full force mind you but enough to keep the fish interested.

Looks like fun up there. I need to find time to explore in Kamloops country.

There are hundreds of lakes to explore, and I've met some real nice folks while doing so.

Might go one last time near Merrit this weekend.

I'm a bit envious "if" you get back up there. My wife and I spent the night in Kamloops last night and drove by Merritt this morning. It was 38°F as we came down into the Nicola valley. No wind - I was thinking about some of the not so secret lakes that I love to fish. I've only been up in the spring. Sure would like to hit them in the autumn. Having fly rods, boat and all the other necessary items wasn't an option on this trip. ;-(

ps. thanks for the link

Me too, I think the crowds would be much smaller.

How do you guys get across the boarder?
How do you guys get across the boarder?
By car, using the border crossings; much less of a problem than sneaking across on foot. :) If you're talking about where to cross the border, I usually cross at the Sumas border crossing for the Thompson/Nicola region. The Sumas crossing is usually (but not always) less crowded and quicker than the other crossings. For the Kootenay region, I use Eastport in northern Idaho.

Came across at Nighthawk this spring. Both times they asked WHY I was crossing at Nighthawk. Also I got stopped LEAVING the US at Nighthawk.

Something is going on. Never had a problem crossing there before.

I crossed at Nighthawk on my way back from fishing in May, I think the Agent was bored but I did get the same question; why are you crossing at Nighthawk. I said I like the area and solitude.
While fishing in Kamloops I tweaked my knee while loading my pram.
So I stopped and got some Tylenol with Caffeine and Codeine. It worked great so I went back and got another bottle of 100 tablets to bring home. While crossing the border at Sumas I noticed the sign that said to declare everything purchased. Well, the agent asked me the question and I responded with what I had bought along with the 2 bottles of Tylenol.
He looked at me and said, " You are only allowed 50 tablets". They were buried in my luggage in the back of the pram covered under all my gear. "Oh CRAP! Well in the end after a short delay of typing in the computer, he said I could go, but to remember the next time I come up to check the regs.:eek:
